Purpose of Announcement

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION.

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.

Kind of Work

Under the general direction of a Recreation Administrator and Recreation Zone Manager, this employee is responsible for providing supervision and direction over all activities and staff at a recreation center. This position supervises and manages the overall operations of a recreation center and surrounding grounds. Evaluates facility in terms of needed supplies, equipment, and personnel. Employee is responsible for providing a budget based on the pre-determined funding available for the year and for tracking expenditures and operating facility within the budget limits. Promotes, schedules, coordinates and supervises athletic programs offered by the respective center for children ages 5 to 19 years of age, to include complete operation of all tournaments assigned to facility. Performs various supervisory duties to include: assigning, instructing, and reviewing work of subordinates, to include evaluating assigned subordinates to assure quality levels are maintained in all areas. Performs related duties as required. Employee will be required to work a flexible schedule which may include working on weekdays, weekends, and holidays. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid drivers license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference.

Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination

Must meet ONE of the following three options:

  1. Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish and at least one (1) year of full-time experience (or two (2) years of part-time experience) working in the Department of Parks & Recreation at or above the level of Recreation Center Supervisor, Assistant.

OR

  1. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; plus, two (2) years of paid, verifiable work experience at a park or recreation facility, indicating ability to oversee daily playground activities (e.g., athletics and/or maintenance), with at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.

OR

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Recreation or Physical Education.

Proof of qualifying education is required.

Any conviction listed in the Louisiana Child Protection Act (Louisiana R.S. 15:587.1) is considered disqualifying, unless written proof of pardon is submitted in time for consideration with the application.

Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

Vacation (Annual Leave)

Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.

Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is

usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.

Sick Leave

Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked.

Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.

Holidays

Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.

Life Insurance

All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one years salary.

Extra insurance may be purchased.

Medical Insurance

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their

dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of

the premiums for dependents.

A Flexible Benefits Plan

Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health

insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings

Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.

Retirement

Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees Retirement

System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after

January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service

is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with

10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.

Tenure Payment

Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.

Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.

Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)

Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer

up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.

Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without

penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
