As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Orton-Gillingham-certified Reading Specialist to strengthen our literacy program by coaching teachers, monitoring intervention implementation, and supporting schoolwide literacy initiatives.
This flexible consulting opportunity is ideal for an experienced literacy coach, dyslexia specialist, retired educator, or reading consultant who is passionate about improving literacy outcomes while mentoring educators.
Position Summary
The Reading Specialist / Orton-Gillingham Literacy Coach provides instructional coaching, literacy intervention oversight, assessment leadership, and data analysis aligned with Sankofa Montessori's comprehensive literacy framework.
Working closely with our leadership team and three intervention co-guides, this role ensures the high-quality implementation of Orton-Gillingham instruction while supporting school-wide literacy growth through coaching, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making.
Commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month
Responsibilities
Instructional Coaching
- Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to three teachers implementing Orton-Gillingham intervention.
- Support teachers in strengthening instructional delivery and intervention fidelity.
- Document coaching observations and action steps using the Bullseye coaching platform.
Classroom Observations
- Conduct bi-weekly observations of Orton-Gillingham instruction.
- Monitor implementation fidelity, instructional pacing, and student engagement.
- Provide written feedback and recommendations following observations.
DIBELS Leadership
Lead schoolwide DIBELS 8th Edition implementation by:
- Training staff on standardized administration
- Monitoring assessment fidelity
- Supporting teachers during assessment windows
- Analyzing and sharing schoolwide literacy data
Progress Monitoring
Prepare quarterly reports summarizing:
- Student growth
- Intervention effectiveness
- Literacy trends
- Recommendations for additional supports
Literacy Reporting
Prepare Beginning-of-Year, Middle-of-Year, and End-of-Year literacy reports for school leadership that include:
- Student achievement data
- Implementation updates
- Growth trends
- Recommendations for continuous improvement
Collaborative Team Leadership
Facilitate a weekly one-hour collaborative planning meeting with intervention teachers to:
- Review student data
- Plan instruction
- Problem-solve student needs
- Calibrate intervention practices
- Provide ongoing professional learning
Requirements
Qualifications
Required:
- Current Orton-Gillingham Certification from an accredited training organization
- Bachelor's degree in Education or related field
- Deep knowledge of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy
- Experience administering and interpreting DIBELS 8th Edition
- Experience coaching educators and providing instructional feedback
- Strong written communication and organizational skills
Preferred:
- Master's degree
- Previous experience serving as a literacy coach or intervention specialist

Compensation
- Competitive hourly rate based on experience and qualifications.
- Approximately 20 hours per month with scheduling flexibility.
