Job Title: Quality Engineer
Job Description
This Quality Engineer role supports North American automotive customers and serves as the primary customer-facing quality contact across the full product lifecycle, from design and new product introduction through production. The position focuses on automotive antenna systems, RF technologies, and connected vehicle products such as telematics, GPS, cellular, V2X, and wireless charging. Operating from a small, engineering-driven satellite office, the Quality Engineer collaborates closely with global manufacturing sites to ensure robust quality performance, timely issue resolution, and compliance with automotive quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary quality contact for North American OEM automotive customers, including managing day-to-day quality communications and expectations.
- Support customer issues and escalations by providing rapid response to urgent OEM concerns and coordinating timely resolutions.
- Lead the preparation, maintenance, and submission of APQP and PPAP documentation for new and existing products.
- Drive quality performance across the supply chain, machining, molding, assembly, and final product validation processes.
- Own and maintain core quality documentation, including FMEAs, control plans, and quality KPIs and metrics.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action activities using structured methodologies such as 8D, fishbone diagrams, DOE, and other problem-solving tools.
- Support new product introduction (NPI) launches and product transfers by ensuring quality requirements are defined, implemented, and verified.
- Implement, monitor, and improve statistical process control (SPC) and other quality systems to ensure stable and capable processes.
- Support ISO 9001 and customer audits by preparing documentation, coordinating activities, and addressing findings.
- Coordinate quality-related activities with global plants and teams in regions such as China, Vietnam, and Mexico.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, program management, and supply chain teams to address quality risks and drive continuous improvement.
- Represent the North American quality function in internal and external meetings, ensuring clear communication of quality status, risks, and actions.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (required unless supported by exceptional relevant experience).
- in electronics or automotive electronics, with exposure to electronic components or systems.
- Automotive quality experience, preferably with OEM or Tier 1 suppliers, ideally supporting customers such as GM, Tesla, or Ford.
- Hands-on experience with APQP and PPAP processes, including documentation, submission, and approval.
- Strong experience with FMEA and control plan development and maintenance.
- Proven ability to perform root cause analysis and corrective actions using tools such as 8D, fishbone diagrams, DOE, and similar methodologies.
- Proficiency with SPC tools and techniques for monitoring and improving process performance.
- Customer-facing quality experience, including direct interaction with OEMs or major automotive customers.
- Experience supporting NPI and product launches, ensuring quality requirements are met throughout the introduction process.
- Exposure to ISO 9001 and quality management systems, with auditing experience preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25%, typically 4-6 trips per year, primarily to OEM customer sites.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to manage escalations and maintain effective customer relationships.
- Ability to work independently as a standalone Quality Engineer in the region while collaborating with global quality teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with RF, antenna, or connectivity products used in automotive or related applications.
- Experience in electronics manufacturing environments, such as assembly, PCB, or cable production.
- Six Sigma certification or training, such as Yellow Belt or Green Belt.
- Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience working with global teams, particularly in Asia and Mexico, across different time zones and cultures.
- Demonstrated comfort handling OEM escalations and urgent quality issues in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to thrive in a small, highly collaborative engineering-focused team setting.
Work Environment
This role is based out of a small office in Brighton, Michigan, working within a team of approximately seven employees in an engineering-driven, non-manufacturing satellite site. The location focuses on automotive antenna systems, RF technologies, and connected vehicle products, supporting global production facilities rather than operating its own manufacturing lines. The position is highly cross-functional and global, requiring regular collaboration with teams and plants in China, Vietnam, Mexico, and other regions. The environment is fast-paced and customer-driven, with a strong emphasis on supporting OEM launches, resolving quality issues quickly, and maintaining high standards of documentation and compliance. Travel is approximately 25%, typically involving 4-6 trips per year to OEM customer sites, including occasional urgent visits. When visiting customers, there is flexibility to return home afterward without needing to return to the office the same day. The role involves standard professional office attire and typical office-based tools and technologies to support engineering and quality activities.
