There is an opening in the Operations Warehouse for a Pima County Public Works Crew Supervisor. Duties for this position include purchasing, receiving, and distributing supplies and materials to Maintenance staff, supervising warehouse staff during daily warehouse duties, supervising staff during welding and fabrication projects, requesting purchase orders for work being performed by contractors, and using software to issue and track inventory items. Successful candidate will be required to train and assign tasks to inmate work crews and pass an Arizona Department of Corrections background check. Successful candidate will be required to operate a forklift to perform freight loading and unloading. This position requires on call duties for storm response during inclement weather.  

Primary duties will include:

Supervision of staff in a warehouse setting. Assign tasks to Arizona Department of Corrections inmate work crews and adult probation work crews. Inspect guardrail and handrail repairs needed. Inspect homeless encampments needing to be cleaned. Submitting P.O. requests for work performed by contractors. Inspecting job sites after contractors have completed work. Use Maximo to issue inventory items distributed to field crews. Supervise staff during welding and fabrication activities. Be on call to dispatch field staff to areas affected by inclement weather.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises and assigns work crews in field maintenance of public works construction activities and participates in the work of assigned crews;

  • Monitors public works field maintenance and construction activities including productivity, safety practices, quality control and reviews equipment utilization logs of assigned multiple work crews;

  • Plans and lays out work order materials and prepares reports of complete public works maintenance construction projects and inventory of supplies used;

  • Coordinates crew and equipment assignments with other supervisors, crew supervisors and contract construction agencies to assure availability of resources and to avoid work stoppages;

  • Operates and performs operator-level maintenance and servicing of assigned general, heavy and special equipment, e.g., pressure cleaner, dozers, scrapers, water truck, grader, front end loader, jackhammer, tractor trailer and pickup trucks;

  • Constructs and maintains pavement cuts, roads, dips and edges, bridges, box culverts and related structures;

  • Establishes or directs establishment and maintenance of work site traffic control measures to assure safety of workers and the public;

  • Coordinates activities of wastewater crews in the repair and maintenance of sewer lines and other sanitary sewerage facilities, to include vector, odor and corrosion control;

  • Supervises the preparation, development and operation of sanitary landfill sites and solid waste transfer stations;

  • Assign and direct work of public work crews through use of computer systems and crew assigned tablets;

  • Responds to and resolves complaints or inquiries from the public relative to public works transportation, solid waste and wastewater management operations, construction, repair or maintenance activity;

  • Reviews, interprets and works from blueprints, schematics, field engineering and design notes, surveys, plots and related technical documents;

  • May act as Public Works Supervisor in their absence.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum four (4) years of experience in commercial, industrial or public works maintenance, repair or construction which included operation of heavy equipment AND one year of lead or supervisory experience in commercial, industrial or a public works construction or maintenance setting.

(Graduation from an accredited college or technical school in environmental technology, engineering or a related discipline may substitute for the general experience.)

OR:

Minimum two (2) years of experience with Pima County as a Conveyance System Monitor II Equipment Operator or Equipment Operator II or III, or Utility Maintenance Worker II or III AND one year of lead or supervisory experience in a public works construction or maintenance setting.

(Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment may be substituted.)

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as a supervisor.

  • Experience with/knowledge of general fabrication.

  • Experience with/knowledge in welding.

  • Experience with/knowledge of Maximo.

  • Experience with/knowledge of job order contracts.

  • Experience in a warehouse setting.

  • Experience working with inmate work crews.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.

Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen, which may include respirator fit test.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Some positions require the ability to lift, push, pull or move equipment weighing from 50 up to 75 pounds. Any additional physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position.

Working Conditions: Some positions may carry the risk of exposure to infectious diseases, asbestos or wastewater and sewage products, therefore special medical screening prior to or during employment may be necessary to assure employee health and safety. Some positions may require the ability to enter and work in confined spaces, which may require the proper wearing of individual safety and protective equipment.
