Are you looking to be part of an innovative team of professionals dedicated to telling South Carolinas diverse stories? The South Carolina State Museum is the largest museum in South Carolina, stewarding over 1.1 million objects and specimens and welcoming 5 million+ visitors over its 37-year history. The museum has recently embarked on a renovation of 150,000 square feet of its exhibition, programmatic and collection storage spaces occupying four floors of a historic 1890s textile mill on the National Register of Historic Places. This renovation will incorporate artwork, artifacts and specimens in new spaces across our 4 disciplines, as well as additional gallery space dedicated to the museum's art collection. We are seeking a Public Safety Officer to ensure the safety and security of the visitors, staff, facilities, and collections at the South Carolina State Museum. The Public Safety Officer assists in asset protection, loss prevention, emergency response and creating a positive visitor experience while assisting with implementing policies and procedures designed to protect the human and physical assets of the Museum. The Public Safety Officer will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring, answering questions, and providing directions for guests to ensure safety, and maximize the guest experience.
  • Safeguarding the Museums collection and physical assets while enforcing policies and providing excellence in customer service.
  • Responding to emergencies, taking predetermined action for the situation at hand, and rendering first aid in the event of an accident or illness.
  • Investigating all observed or reported suspicious activity and preparing daily and periodic reports.
  • Insuring proper communications with guests, service users, vendors, employees, and supervisor regarding matters of security needs, concerns, or problems.
  • Assisting all departments with security matters.
  • Following all security policies and procedures and maintaining a proficiency in the use of security equipment.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-years of experience in security, the military, fire prevention, or law enforcement.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with guests, employees, and management.
  • Ability to work during SCSMs operation hours, including evening events, weekends, and holidays.

Other Requirements:

  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Solid critical thinking skills, including use of logic and reasoning to identify problems and solutions.
  • Ability to make sound professional decisions.
  • Use of discernment and good judgement needed to differentiate between confidential, sensitive, and general information.
  • Intermediate MS Word, Excel, and Outlook skills.
  • Read and interpret manuals and instructions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to conduct foot patrols through entire museum, several times per shift.
  • Physically respond to emergency situations as they arise.
  • Climb and descend multiple sets of stairs regularly.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs., periodically.
  • Stand and sit for extended periods of time regularly.
  • Bend, stoop, and twist regularly.
  • Manipulate items with fingers frequently.
  • Operate a computer regularly.
  • Visually inspect displays/monitors regularly.
