The City of Vacaville is seeking highly motivated and dependable individuals who thrive in a fast-paced environment to join our Public Safety Communications Team as a lateral Public Safety Dispatcher II. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list to fill vacancies that may arise within the next 12 months.

The Communications Center is staffed by a team consisting of one Communications Manager, four Communications Supervisors and 19 Public Safety Dispatchers. ABOUT YOU

The Ideal Public Safety Dispatcher Candidate:

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with all City departments, employees at all levels, other law enforcement agencies and members of the public. They will demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, sound judgment and the ability to remain calm, focused and professional while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, including critical incidents and emergency situations.

Typical duties and responsibilities of a City of Vacaville Public Safety Dispatcher II include:

  • Receiving and responding to routine and emergency calls
  • Referring callers to appropriate agencies
  • Providing general information to the public
  • Assigning and coordinating responses to calls for service involving Police and Fire units

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of the California POST Dispatch Academy is required.

Experience: Three (3) years of work experience performing a variety of increasingly responsible duties equivalent to that of a Public Safety Dispatcher I with the City of Vacaville.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or eligibility for, the POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate and the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certificate.

Positions in the classifications of Public Safety Dispatcher I/II are expected to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month. Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits (including CalPERS membership), and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (40 hours per year).

Part-time positions are not covered by Social Security and are not eligible for the City of Vacavilles retirement plan through CalPERS and are therefore required to make 7.5% pre-tax contributions into a qualified plan under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA). For the City of Vacaville, the plan is a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Nationwide Retirement Systems, Inc.
