Job Summary This is a civilian position designed to assist certified police officers in the performance of their duties by performing tasks that do not require law enforcement certification. Public Service Aides support officers by responding to calls for service involving non-criminal matters assisting with traffic control at incidents and community events addressing parking complaints and performing related duties.
This position assists in providing public safety services to the community while performing non-enforcement functions. The hours of these positions vary as to the specific assignment but all are based on a forty-hour week. All positions are subject to callbacks and working weekends and holidays.
Public Service Aides do not exercise peace officer authority and perform duties that do not require law enforcement certification.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment random reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances marijuana amphetamines opioids phencyclidine PCP and cocaine as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Typical Duties
·Patrols assigned areas of the City in a vehicle or on foot to monitor parking violations community concerns and other non-criminal activities.
·Responds to calls for service related to non-criminal incidents and provides assistance to the public.
·Provides traffic control at accident scenes construction zones community events and other situations requiring traffic direction.
·Assists certified officers by responding to calls in a non-enforcement support role.
·Collects basic information and prepares reports related to minor incidents or property damage accidents that do not involve injuries or fatalities.
·Prepares reports of activities performed and unusual incidents observed.
·Completes reports and other related documents in a timely manner.
·Verbally interacts with witnesses victims and members of the public to obtain information.
·Performs directed patrol activities such as monitoring high-traffic areas parking violations and other community concerns.
·Assists officers at incident scenes by directing traffic securing areas or performing other support tasks as assigned.
·Participates in community outreach activities and events as assigned.
·Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City and Department policies procedures and safety practices.
Minimum Qualifications
·Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
·Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
·Some experience in law enforcement public service customer service or college coursework in criminal justice or a related field preferred but not required.
·Must successfully pass a background investigation. Applicants with felony convictions domestic violence convictions or other disqualifying criminal offenses related to the duties of the position may be disqualified from employment.
Licenses and Certificates
·Must possess or be able to obtain a valid New Mexico drivers license and maintain a good driving record to meet insurance requirements.
Physical Requirements
·Must possess sufficient clarity of speech and hearing with or without reasonable accommodation to communicate effectively using telephone radio and face-to-face interactions.
·Must possess sufficient vision with or without reasonable accommodation to read written materials and observe surroundings.
·Must possess sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation to write reports utilize equipment required for the performance of duties direct traffic and operate a motor vehicle.
·Must possess sufficient personal mobility flexibility stamina strength and physical reflexes with or without reasonable accommodation to walk bend stoop direct traffic and perform duties in a public safety environment.
Working Conditions
·Essential duties are performed both indoors and outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
·Employee may be exposed to airborne particles biological hazards electrical hazards and extreme temperatures while working around vehicles and traffic.
·Work may involve irregular hours including nights weekends holidays and on-call duty.
