Job Specifications

The City of Tallahassee is seeking motivated individuals to join our Public Infrastructure team. In this role, youll perform hands-on work supporting the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and drainage systems that keep our community safe and moving.

This position is part of a career progression series, allowing you to enter at a level that matches your experience and grow through training, certifications, and increasingly complex assignments.

What Youll Do:

• Perform manual labor to support construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and drainage systems.
• Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure components.
• Operate trucks and equipment such as dump trucks, flatbeds, pickups, and Vac trucks.
• Use hand tools, power tools, and related equipment to complete assigned work.
• Perform site clean-up, trench backfill, seeding, mulching, and restoration of work areas.
• Assist with traffic control through signing and flagging operations.
• Load and unload materials and equipment.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
• Respond to emergency situations and work on-call or standby as required.
• Attend and complete training to develop skills and advance within the classification series.

Minimum Training & Experience

Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate required for all levels. Level placement will be based on qualifications.

• Public Infrastructure Technician I: Entry-level; no prior experience required. Works under direct supervision while learning required skills and duties.
• Public Infrastructure Technician II: Two years of experience in construction and/or operation of construction-related equipment, or two years of experience that includes construction and/or maintenance of streets and/or drainage infrastructure, or two years of experience as a Public Infrastructure Technician I.
• Public Infrastructure Technician III: Three years of experience in construction and maintenance that includes streets and/or drainage infrastructure and operation of related equipment, or three years as a Public Infrastructure Technician II.

Necessary Special Requirements

Applies to all levels:

• Must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
• For designated positions, must obtain and maintain a Leon County Inmate Supervisory certification.

Public Infrastructure Technician I:

• Valid Class E State drivers license at the time of appointment.
• Must obtain a commercial learners permit (CLP) within three (3) months from the date of appointment.
• Must obtain a Class A State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with required endorsement(s) within nine (9) months from the date of appointment.
• Must progress to Public Infrastructure Technician II within 24 months to maintain employment.

Public Infrastructure Technician II:

• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with required endorsements.
• Must obtain and maintain the following certifications:
• Maintenance of Traffic
• Confined Space
• Excavation, Trenching, and Shoring
• For designated positions:
• Florida Stormwater Association Level 1 Operator OR DEP Stormwater Erosion and Sedimentation Control Inspector certification.
• Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I certification.

Public Infrastructure Technician III:

• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with required endorsements.
• Must obtain and maintain the following certifications:
• Maintenance of Traffic
• Confined Space
• Excavation, Trenching, and Shoring
• For designated positions:
• Florida Stormwater Association Level 2 Operator
• Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level II certification.

Salary Range

$16.1262 to $43.7596/hourly.

Additional Information

Work schedules consist of four (4) 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday.
