Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as Public Information and Marketing Specialist for Student Housing Services (SHS), University of Hawai'i at Manoa, overseeing both internal and external communications, public relations and the marketing strategy to aid department in meeting objectives and goals.
  • In collaboration with the SHS Director, defines and develops strategic media relations plan for internal and external audiences.
  • Responsible for development, implementation, coordination, and tracking of all media relations for external groups using traditional media (print, broadcast, video information releases) and digital media (website & blog, social media, other graphic presentation materials) to include local, regional, national and international media groups.
  • Responsible for development, implementation and coordination of all media for internal groups, working with students, staff, department and college public information personnel, UH System external public relations & special events staff.
  • Develops and maintains professional contacts within the University at every level to better connect University initiatives, successes to ensure proper and consistent content communications.
  • Oversees the preparation, dissemination, archiving and storage of news releases, articles for publication, public service announcements, department newsletters, and other forms of public communications.
  • Provides content for the units website, video channels and social media distribution venues, assists with writing and producing video as needed.
  • Monitors comments or posts; responds directly or connect user with appropriate personnel for response.
  • Oversees proactive outreach to traditional and digital media entities to encourage external coverage of SHS residential activities.
  • Advises administrators and staff on talking points at news conferences or during interviews with the media.
  • Coordinates SHS public relations response to crisis situations, advising administration, managers, and University-level public information officers in crisis communication.
  • Collaborate with University of Hawai'i Office of Communications to develop, write and disseminate news releases and media advisories for SHS and that are in alignment with department and UHM¿s mission and long-range strategic plan(s).
  • Collaborate with various University PIO/Communications/Marketing personnel to ensure consistency and alignment across the Manoa campus.
  • Oversees the maintenance of the SHS media database.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest media technologies and adapts them as appropriate to the SHS media relations direction; ensuring ADA compliance and best practices for technical security and scalability standards.
  • Using analytical tools available, determines what programs, projects and channels are successful and unsuccessful to guide and regularly update overall social media strategy.
  • May supervise the work of lower-level staff.
  • May serve on University committees and attends University functions on behalf of SHS, including representation of SHS to UH Manoa and UH System media teams.
  • Works nights, weekends, and holidays, as necessary.
  • Maintains active communication via company-issued cell phone to provide real-time updates and respond promptly to urgent inquiries or operational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for journalism, public relations/media experience at an institution of higher education; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

  2. Experience in creating effective presentations that display data, events, and activities in a clear, concise manner using a variety of media.

  3. Experience in writing and editing news releases, articles and speeches and adapting them to various audiences, including community members, State entities and the general media.

  4. Experience in converting basic information into items of interest to the media and the general public.

  5. Demonstrated ability in establishing & maintaining effective working relationships with groups such as county, State & federal government entities, community leaders, students, administrators, alumni, representatives of media organizations and/or general public.

  6. Experience using presentation software applications, publication software, social networking services, and/or video-sharing websites.

  7. Proficient with web content management systems (WordPress or similar); proficient with online marketing, social networking, Google analytics, and/or other online marketing tools/platforms.

  8. Experience in creating and editing video media stories.

  9. Ability to efficiently adapt to the ever-changing needs of a day-to-day operation; responding calmly and professionally in high-pressure situations.

  10. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as necessary.

  11. Ability to use a company-issued cell phone to maintain timely communication.

  12. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of journalism, public relations, education, social service and/or government relations as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

  13. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with journalism, media and/or public relations.

  14. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

  15. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

  16. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

  17. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply Microsoft Office software.

  18. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Familiarity or experience in university housing or at an institution of higher education.
