About Lawrence Public School's Adult Learning Center:
Lawrence Public Schools is an urban district serving more than 13,000 students, the majority of whom are economically disadvantaged. More than 70% of our students speak a language other than English as their first language. We are committed to ensuring that our students, who have for too long been underserved, are provided with a high quality, free, public education at their local, district schools. The Lawrence Public School's Adult Learning Center. has been providing free Adult Basic Education and ESOL classes to the citizens of Lawrence, MA and the surrounding communities for more than 40 years. The LPS-ALC provides quality educational services to 500 - 600 students per year who desire to develop: English language, literacy, numeracy, and technology skills for further education, job training, and better employment. We also provide instruction in civics to help prepare students to pass the USCIS Citizenship Exam.
Lawrence Public School's Adult Learning Center Vision:
Is to ensure that all English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) students achieve the learning goals they have set upon entry into our program. By improving students' skills in the areas of academics, language, technology, and workforce development, we will increase their opportunities to enter college, to obtain an industry-recognized credential, to expand their career choices, to enjoy a family-sustaining wage, and to become effective citizens of their community.
About This Position:
The role of LPS-ALC Outstation Advisor is to serve as a liaison between the Adult Education (AE) system and the MassHire Merrimack Valley Career Center (MVCC). The major focus of the Advisor is to provide two-way referrals that will help MVCC customers access the AE system by either enrolling in a GED or HiSET program that will lead to a high school equivalency credential, or to improve their English proficiency level. The Outstation Advisor's role is to ensure that MVCC customers have meaningful access to AE services throughout the North Shore workforce region.
Reports to: Principal of the Lawrence Public School's - Adult Learning Center, and will work collaboratively with MVCC staff, LPS-ALC Advisors, & staff, and area AE providers.
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
Connect eligible AE students looking for employment or training to MVCC;
Build partnerships with area businesses, AE providers, and training programs leading to an industry recognized credential;
Develop a two-way referral process with MVCC staff and area ABE providers servicing MVCC customers;
Establish and maintain a schedule with posted hours at the Valley Works Career Center;
Maintain and share accurate records monthly of customer intakes, assessments, referrals, and other services provided;
Utilize LPS-LPS-ALC approved assessments to gather vital intake data;
Schedule appointments for MVCC customers seeking ABE services;
Provide follow-up contact with customers to ensure that they either enroll in AE classes or are placed on a waiting list
Greet and advise MVCC walk-in or phone-in customers when on-site;
Disseminate information about MVCC services to regional AE programs (e.g. making presentations at AE programs, organizing informational trips to other MVCC's throughout the state, hosting webinars, or e-mailing information to other AE programs about MVCC events and services);
Provide current, accurate and comprehensive information, and or data about MVCC services;
Communicate effectively, consistently, and professionally with MVCC customers and staff, and LPS-ALC colleagues;
Network and visit area MVCC's to learn and apply innovative practices;
Attend annual MCAE Networking Conference, and other related trainings (e.g. MVCC, WIOA);
Attend weekly LPS-ALC staff meeting
Complete the fifteen (15) hour The Art of Teaching, part of the Foundations for New Staff course through SABES required of all educators new to the adult education (AE) field in the first year of employment;
Comply with school, district, city, and statewide policies, regulations, and laws;
Complete other duties as assigned;
Key Competencies:
Knowledge:
Familiarity with the field of Adult Education, and HSE programs and exams, and ESOL instruction;
Sound understanding of adult learning theory;
Familiarity with employment trends and needs of the Merrimack Valley area;
Sound knowledge of career and training opportunities available to MVCC customers;
Strong foundation in second language acquisition and linguistics;
Demonstrated proficiency using digital literacy tools, as well as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
Certification in required AE/ESOL assessments: Best Plus, TABE CLASS E - Reading/Writing;

Qualifications:
Bilingual preferred;
Bachelor's Degree Required/ Master's Degree preferred;
Valid Massachusetts Teaching License preferred,
At least three (3) years' experience working with adults in an Adult Education setting;
Current Authorization to work in the United States.
