Description

Position Summary: The Transportation Safety and Training Specialist is responsible for overseeing the training and certifying new and existing bus drivers to ensure safe and efficient transportation of students. This position will work closely with the Transportation Department leadership to develop and implement comprehensive training programs, conduct classroom instruction, and provide hands-on training feedback in a variety of driving conditions. In addition this position will serve as the districts 3rd Party CDL Examiner.

Essential Functions:

\u25cf Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive bus driver training program that meets all State and Federal regulations.

\u25cf Conduct classroom instruction on topics such as:

\u25cb Safe driving practices

\u25cb Defensive driving techniques

\u25cb Emergency procedures

\u25cb Student management

\u25cb Special education transportation

\u25cf Provide hands on, behind-the-wheel training in various driving conditions, including:

\u25cb Urban and rural routes

\u25cb Inclement weather conditions

\u25cb Night driving

\u25cf Evaluate driver performance and provide feedback to improve driving skills and safety practices, including contracted testing.

\u25cf Maintain accurate records of driver training, certifications, and performance evaluations, including maintaining an efficient record-retention system.

\u25cf Stay current on State and Federal regulations related to school bus driver training.

\u25cf Monitor fuel system, including State testing.

\u25cf Assist with the development and implementation of transportation policies and procedures.

\u25cf Collaborate with the Transportation Department to address driver concerns and improve training and professional development programs.

\u25cf Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

\u25cf Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with 2 years experience in a Class B vehicle.

\u25cf Strong instructional and communication skills.

\u25cf Ability to effectively train and evaluate drivers.

\u25cf Knowledge of State and Federal regulations governing school bus operations.

\u25cf Excellent organizational and time management skills.

\u25cf Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

\u25cf Previous experience as a bus driver trainer.

\u25cf Previous experience as a DOT Third Party CDL Examiner.

\u25cf Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements .

\u25cf Proven experience as a school bus driver.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • Licensing: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements: Required for operating a school bus.
  • DOT Physical Certification: Required to meet federal health and safety standards for commercial drivers.
  • Safe Driving Record: No more than two moving violations in the past three years.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow route instructions, adhere to traffic laws, and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Customer Service: Ability to interact professionally with drivers, students, parents, and school staff.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and sit for extended periods.

Working Conditions: This job is performed primarily inside the transportation office, transportation bus barn, or District-owned vehicle.
