Research & Development - Protein Characterization Scientist

The position requires the performance of a variety of tasks, including:

  • Designing experiments and developing methods to characterize proteins, antibodies, and antibody drug conjugates (ADCs).
  • Performing protein therapeutics characterization tests in support of molecular assessment and formulation development.
  • Providing technical mentorship to associate scientists.

This position requires knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, procedures, and instrumentation used in a chemistry laboratory. The Protein Characterization Scientist manages projects with some supervision and reports to the lab supervisor. The Protein Characterization Scientist must be able to think and work independently yet share ideas and work toward team goals. The ability to express thoughts in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing, is also expected. Works to establish the ability to effectively prioritize and plan multiple work activities with varying deadlines and complexities.

This is a full-time role.

Work Schedule Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flexible hours such as early, late, and weekend shifts may be required.

Work Restrictions Because of the vital nature of this work, we do not allow medical marijuana cards, and we conduct random drug testing on all of our employees.

Essential Functions

  • Qualitatively and quantitatively test client samples.
  • Development and validation of analytical methods.
  • Manage research projects and coordinate project-related work between different departments of ARL.
  • Write research protocols, project reports, and working instructions.
  • Communicate with clients regarding project/sample test status.

Position Requirements

  • A BS in chemistry or related science with 4 years of industrial experience in protein characterization in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical space.
  • PhD in chemistry or related science with 2 years of industrial experience in protein characterization in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical space.
  • Proficient with protein intact mass determination, protein digestion, protein sequence, and post-translational modification identification.
  • Proficient with HPLC and high-resolution LC-MS/MS such as Orbitrap.
  • Oral and Written Communication Proficiency using the English Language.

Work Environment This job operates in a laboratory environment.

Physical Demands This position often requires:

  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Dexterity in fingers and hands to perform complex and precise manipulations.
  • Ability to walk and stand.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • See in the normal visual range, including the ability to distinguish colors and shades.
  • Hear in the normal audio range, with or without correction.
