Project Engineer

Position Summary

System One is working with a client seeking a results-driven Project Engineer to lead and support capital projects from concept through execution.

This role is responsible for managing the full project lifecycle, including scope development, capital approval (AR) preparation, detailed design, and construction oversight.

The ideal candidate will focus on driving process improvements that increase throughput, enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality. This role also includes designing, building, and commissioning capital projects to support operational advancements. Projects typically range from $25K to $3M+, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee engineering design efforts and field execution to ensure projects meet specifications
  • Ensure all projects incorporate safety standards and regulatory compliance in scope and design
  • Partner with plant leadership to develop annual and long-range capital plans
  • Participate in and lead safety and compliance efforts, including:
    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
    • Management of Change (MOC)
    • Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)
    • Process Safety Management (PSM) audits
    • Incident investigations
  • Develop process flow diagrams, plant layouts, and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Perform and review engineering calculations and detailed designs
  • Select equipment and develop technical specifications for systems and processes
  • Prepare cost estimates, manage project budgets, and track schedules
  • Develop bid packages; solicit, evaluate, and select contractors
  • Approve project-related purchase requisitions within authorization limits
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and equipment/process records
  • Support development of operating procedures and ensure smooth project handoff to operations
  • Provide leadership and direction to internal and external project resources
  • Ensure contractor adherence to site safety policies
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of engineering codes, standards, and regulations
  • Safeguard confidential and proprietary company information

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline (other engineering degrees considered with relevant experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of project engineering or project management experience, preferably in chemical, fermentation, or similar process-driven industries
  • Proven ability to manage projects from initiation through completion while meeting cost, schedule, and performance goals
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong analytical thinking and a continuous improvement mindset
  • Customer-focused with the ability to drive practical, results-oriented solutions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies
  • Working knowledge of SAP
