Job Title: Project Engineer

Job Description

The Project Engineer supports complex upgrade projects in live telecommunications and carrier facilities, focusing on mechanical and electrical systems. This role contributes to the successful execution of phased work that includes temporary cooling solutions, end-of-life replacement of existing equipment, and upgrades to mechanical, HVAC, electrical systems, utility rooms, administrative buildings, and white rooms. The Project Engineer manages key production and financial aspects of projects, actively supports project management and supervision activities, and develops toward future roles in project management or field supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preconstruction activities by supporting buyout and equipment procurement, including developing and maintaining submittal logs and procurement schedules.
  • Process and track submittals, coordinate subcontracting activities, and collaborate closely with project team members to ensure projects start efficiently and remain on schedule.
  • Assist in project change management by requesting pricing from subcontractors and suppliers, reviewing their proposals, and processing change orders in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Support and at times lead meetings with subcontractors, owners, and engineering teams to ensure clear communication, alignment on project goals, and timely resolution of issues.
  • Assist in project safety assurance by supporting the implementation of safety procedures and helping monitor adherence to safety standards on site.
  • Review and process subcontractor and supplier invoices, and assist in preparing and submitting pay applications to project owners.
  • Generate Requests for Information (RFIs), coordinate with owners and engineers to obtain clarifications, and distribute RFI responses to project teammates to maintain accurate and current project information.
  • Conduct weekly project progress site visits to project locations throughout the country to monitor work, verify progress, and support field teams.
  • For those willing to travel full time at times, assist with project supervision efforts, particularly on smaller projects, by supporting field oversight and coordination.
  • Lead the project closeout process by managing completion of punch list items, compiling and organizing as-built documents, preparing operations and maintenance manuals, documenting owner training activities, and furnishing warranties.
  • Support project schedule updates, contribute to daily reports, and assist in preparing and maintaining three-week look-ahead schedules to keep all stakeholders informed.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with owners, engineering teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams to support successful project delivery.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in construction environments, particularly on projects involving mechanical, electrical, and HVAC upgrades.
  • Proficiency with Requests for Information (RFIs) and submittals, including preparation, tracking, and coordination.
  • Ability to assist in construction management activities such as procurement, change management, scheduling, and project documentation.
  • Strong skills in developing and maintaining submittal logs and procurement schedules.
  • Capability to review subcontractor and supplier proposals, invoices, and pay applications with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills to participate in and sometimes lead meetings with owners, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook.
  • Degree in Construction Management or an equivalent field.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Project Engineer or Assistant Project Manager with a general contractor or construction management company.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites, including weekly site visits and occasional full-time travel when required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with telecom or carrier facilities, especially in live operational environments, is beneficial.
  • Experience supporting phased work involving temporary cooling, end-of-life equipment replacement, and system upgrades is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with coordinating work in utility rooms, administrative buildings, and white rooms.
  • Ability to support project safety initiatives and contribute to a strong safety culture.
  • Experience assisting with project supervision on smaller projects.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing as-built documentation, operations and maintenance manuals, and closeout deliverables.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with owners, design professionals, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams.

Work Environment

The Project Engineer works primarily on construction projects that upgrade mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems in live telecom and carrier facilities. The work environment includes utility rooms, administrative buildings, and white rooms, often requiring careful coordination around active operations and phased construction activities such as temporary cooling and equipment replacement. The role involves a combination of office-based tasks-such as documentation, scheduling, RFIs, submittals, and financial tracking-using Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook, as well as regular visits to active construction sites. Weekly travel to project locations across the country is required, and at times the role may involve full-time travel to support project supervision. The environment is collaborative, with frequent interaction among owners, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams, and emphasizes safety, clear communication, and structured project execution.
