This On-Call/temporary position supports the Cultural Resources Division within the Environmental Department and related work required by other Departments of the Company. The Project Archaeologist is responsible for the organization and supervision of archaeological field work, archaeological research and report writing, providing support to the Cultural Resources Group, and other related Environmental Department and company-wide tasks as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Act as a Principal Investigator and implement archaeological fieldwork and laboratory work in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and its guidelines, and in compliance with guidelines for archaeology in Pennsylvania as published by the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office.
  • Work with the Cultural Resource Group's Team Leader and Project Archaeologist in project planning, research, and reporting.
  • Prepare for and plan the mobilization of archaeological fieldwork. Be the primary Point of Contact for the purposes of contacting archaeological field technicians and arranging accommodations for jobs located away from the CR Group's New Cumberland base of operations. When required, work with the Team Leader or the Senior Archaeologist in conducting online and archival research in preparation for archaeological fieldwork.
  • Collaborate with the Group Leader in drafting work plans for specific Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III archaeological investigations; and in the field, be responsible for implementing these project-specific work plans.
  • Take responsibility for the well-being and safety of the field crew, following OSHA guidelines for worksite safety in the field.
  • Point of Contact for interested members of the public when leading a project in the field and also takes part in field views with agency reviewers, along with the Team Leader.
  • When called for in the work plan, provides guidance for N&W's Survey Teams and collects Global Positioning System data to produce electronic maps of archaeological work areas.
  • Prepare Negative Survey Forms, Pennsylvania Archaeological Site Survey Forms, and full-format reports.
  • Maintain and organize laboratory equipment and maintain the organization and cleanliness of the Cultural Resource Group's archaeological laboratory.
  • Act as the archaeological Lab Director.
    • Analyze and process information related to attributes of prehistoric and historic artifacts recovered from field investigations.
    • Develop data management procedures that meet state repository standards.
    • Additional essential duties include but are not limited to the following: artifact analysis and logging, database management, photography, preparation of artifact inventories, preparation of artifacts for curation, and coordinating with property owners in regards to donating artifacts and acquiring the appropriate documentation.
