Overview:
What You Will Do
The Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial performance of construction projects, supporting one or more Account Managers. This role partners closely with Account Managers and Project Managers to oversee project budgets, track costs, manage billing, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
This position plays a key role in maintaining financial accuracy, supporting project profitability, and ensuring compliance with company policies and contractual requirements.
A Typical Day at Prime Controls
Project Financial Management
- Set up new projects and budgets within the accounting system
- Monitor project costs, budgets, and overall profitability
- Track job costs including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses
- Identify cost overruns and communicate financial risks to project teams
Billing & Revenue Recognition
- Prepare and process project billings in the accounting system (e.g., Acumatica), including AIA, time & materials, and progress billing
- Support change order preparation and ensure accurate financial recording
- Track revenue recognition based on project progress and company policies
- Ensure timely and accurate invoicing to clients
- Partner with Accounts Receivable on collections and lien compliance, including processing required notices and documentation
Accounts Payable & Subcontractor Management
- Review vendor and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and alignment with contracts and budgets
- Verify invoices against purchase orders and project financials
- Manage lien waivers and ensure compliance documentation is complete
Project Reporting
- Prepare and maintain monthly project financial reports, including:
- Job cost reports
- Work-in-progress (WIP) reports
- Review forecasts for accuracy and analyze cost-to-complete
- Support monthly close activities related to project accounting
Collaboration & Support
- Partner with Project Managers and Account Managers to review financial performance
- Assist with forecasting and budget adjustments
- Support internal audits and financial reviews
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with contractual requirements and accounting standards
- Maintain accurate and organized project financial records
What You Will Bring
The Basic
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
Experience
- 3–7 years of accounting experience, preferably within construction or project-based environments
- Experience with job cost accounting and construction billing
Skills
- Strong understanding of construction accounting and job costing
- Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., Acumatica or similar ERP systems)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
The Preferred
- Experience working with general contractors or specialty subcontractors
- Knowledge of WIP reporting and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
