The University of South Carolina's University 101 Programs is seeking a collaborative and student-focused Program Coordinator for Peer Leadership to support one of the university's largest student leadership initiatives. This position plays a key role in recruiting, training, and supporting more than 300 Peer Leaders who co-teach UNIV 101 courses and serve as mentors, and resources for first-year students. Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and campus partners, the Program Coordinator will assist with leadership development, large-scale training events, program assessment, recruitment initiatives, and recognition programs that contribute to an engaging and successful first-year experience.

Primary Duties

  • Recruit, select, and onboard more than 300 new and returning Peer Leaders for UNIV 101 and EDLP 520.
  • Plan and facilitate dynamic training experiences that prepare Peer Leaders to serve as mentors, co-teachers, and campus leaders.
  • Support the continued development of students serving in the Peer Leader role.
  • Match Peer Leaders with instructors to build effective teaching partnerships across UNIV 101 sections.
  • Assess program effectiveness through surveys, evaluations, and data-informed improvements.
  • Coordinate recognition initiatives, including the annual Peer Leader Banquet, Cording Ceremony, appreciation events, social media recognition, and other celebrations.
  • Develop and maintain program resources, including the Peer Leader Toolkit, weekly newsletters, Faculty Resource Manual, and other educational materials.
  • Collaborate with faculty, campus partners, and University 101 staff to continuously enhance the Peer Leader experience.
  • Provide administrative and programmatic support across University 101 Programs while contributing to departmental initiatives.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with and/or teaching a first-year seminar, experience in facilitation, training, and event coordination, and experience with scheduling software or related technologies.
  • May graduates will be considered if they will be able to obtain their degree by the date of employment.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Assist with the selection of over 300 new and returning peer leaders for UNIV courses to ensure that all sections of UNIV 101 and EDLP 520 have an assigned peer leader. This includes helping with the logistics of application review, helping to coordinate the group interview process and logistics, and helping to coordinate the sending of notifications to selected peer leaders and alternates, and communicating with instructor, peer leader and University 101 staff volunteers.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty

Help develop, organize, and implement training events for new and returning peer leaders including fall training for over 240 new peer leaders, spring orientation for 300 new peer leaders and alternates, and returning peer leader spring orientation for over 55 returning peer leaders in order to support and prepare peer leaders for working with a teaching partner and mentoring first-year students. Assist with the training and support of students serving in the Peer Leader + role.

Assist with the development and implementation of peer leader marketing and recruitment initiatives to ensure a robust pool of peer leaders and alternates and assist with the matching process of over 300 teaching teams to ensure high-quality teaching teams across UNIV 101 sections.

Assist with assessment of peer leader programs and initiatives through building and distributing the peer leader end of experience survey and relevant training evaluations in order to maintain a high level of value in the support provided to peer leaders throughout the course of their experience.

Help with the recognition of peer leaders, including end of year banquet, cording ceremony, thank you gifts, press releases, and social media postings in order to ensure peer leaders have a well-rounded experience with opportunities for celebration and reflection.

Support the development of resources related to the Peer Leader Program, including editing and improving the PL Toolkit, creating and disseminating the peer leader weekly newsletter, and making updates to relevant portions of the Faculty Resource Manual and other office resources. This includes maintaining high quality relationships with campus partners in the development of these resources to continue to provide a high-level of support in preparing peer leaders to serve their teaching team and first-year students.

Assist with administrative and programmatic support of cross-functional areas within University 101 Programs. Other duties as assigned to support the needs of the entire department.
