Job Title

This position provides appropriate developmental care and instruction for children and youth ranging in age from 6 weeks to 18 years in Child and Youth Programs (CYP).

The duties of this position are developmental in nature and designed to provide experience and trainingto qualify for mandatory advancement to higher level positions leading to the full performance position. The incumbent serves as a mandated reporter as prescribed by local policy in the case of suspected incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Assists in implementing planned, developmentally appropriate activities, schedules, and routines for children/youth using prepared or developed curriculum, activity plans, and materials which includes group and individual activities.

Helps prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials to accommodate daily schedules and support development of children. Observes and actively participates in maintaining safe and healthy environments to minimize risk to children.

Helps create and assemble play materials (mixing paint and play dough, and props for dramatic plays and equipment for sports activities, etc.). Contributes to the list of needed supplies and equipment for submission to the supervisor.

Assists with attending to the developmental needs of children/youth in assigned area, including relationship building. Helps establish a program environment that promotes positive child interactions with other children and adults. Builds relationships with children and families.

Interacts with children and youth using approved child and youth guidance and development techniques. Interacts professionally with employees, families, and local installation command. Engages in positive, supportive, and developmentally appropriate interactions with children, youth, and families.

Works cooperatively as a member of a team and exhibits strong interpersonal skills with children, youth, and adults.

Supervision of Children

Ensures the supervision, accountability, and oversight of program participants in compliance with the Department of War (DoW), United States Marine Corps (USMC) and local installation policies, standards, and guidance. Assures staff-child ratios are always maintained in assigned classroom/program area.

Maintains awareness and accountability for the whereabouts and safety of all children and youth, aged 6 weeks to 18 years, within the assigned group. Assists with conducting required supervision and accountability measures and practices. Ensures children and youth (as applicable) depart with authorized person according to written parental instructions.

Assists in supervising children and youth during daily schedule of indoor and outdoor activities, on field trips, outings, and during special events. Maintains communication with other employees to request assistance, aid, and report challenges.

Responds to minor illness or injury, renders aid as needed, and completes and submits accident/incident report documentation. Observes program participants for signs that may indicate illness, abuse or neglect and reports as directed.

Helps arrange for or serve appropriate snacks or meals where applicable.

Children with Disabilities and Other Identified Needs

Cares for children and youth with special needs as directed by the supervisor or other higher graded employee. Ensures inclusive programming for children and youth with special needs is implemented within current policy.

Follows all physician-prescribed medications and individualized care instructions, such as those for special diets, feeding procedures, assistive devices, and other needs for special care and attention. Adheres to special instructions provided by parents and multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Teams (IAT) such as medication administration, acute health related conditions, behavior management, and special dietary restrictions or needs. Administers medications and basic care items according to prescribed procedures and CYP medical directives.

Compliance

Assists in achieving and maintaining DoW certification and national accreditation, where applicable. Complies with laws, policies, and regulations applicable to DoW CY programs.

Identifies and responds to emergency situations including evacuations, child/youth illness, and physical and emotional needs. Notifies supervisor of health, fire, and safety compliance concerns. Follows and promotes safety, fitness, health, and nutrition practices.
