Capital University Law School seeks to hire a full-time Professor of Clinical Studies and Associate Director of the General Litigation Clinic to begin in the summer of 2026. This is a full-time faculty position. The Professor and Associate Director will be eligible for long-term contract status which provides security of position and will have full voting rights at faculty meetings on all matters including hiring except matters pertaining to tenure and promotion of tenure-track faculty.

Our General Litigation Clinic represents clients in a broad range of areas including general civil criminal defense, wills and probate, domestic relations, and landlord-tenant. The Professor and Associate Director helps manage Clinic operations, teaches, and supervises students, and participates in faculty governance. Serving in this position requires legal experience in multiple practice areas, including domestic relations, landlord-tenant, and criminal defense experience in managing a small-medium law firm or legal clinic, strong skills in organization, analysis, and oral and written communications, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with integrity and professionalism.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

The Professor and Associate Director works with the Director to manage all aspects of the General Litigation Clinic. Specifically, the Professor and Associate Director:

  • In the Directors absence, supervises Clinic staff, including conducting employee performance evaluations and approving payroll for hourly employees.
  • Works with the Director to oversee intake and assignment of cases, including maintaining a calendar and docket system.
  • Maintains the IOLTA account.
  • Handles client court or public complaints regarding Legal Clinic students or operations.

Training, Education, and Supervision of Students

The Professor and Associate Director supervises, instructs, and mentors legal interns. Specifically, the Professor and Associate Director:

  • Teaches, develops, and updates course materials for the General Litigation Clinic, including integrating technology.
  • Conferences with students individually throughout the semester to provide detailed feedback on casework and performance.
  • Is available to students on an open-door basis.
  • Reviews all substantive correspondence and legal documents prepared by students.
  • Attends all court hearings with students.
  • Evaluates and grades student performance.

Service at the Law School and in the Legal Community

The Professor and Associate Director collaborates with the Director, deans, administrators, faculty, and the broader legal community to enhance the Law Schools mission. Specifically, the Professor and Associate Director:

  • Attends faculty meetings and other University functions.
  • Serves on Law School and University committees.
  • Cooperates with other personnel and departments.
  • Develops and maintains professional contacts within the local community.
  • Stays current on relevant law and local practices.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.).
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Ohio and in good standing or admitted to practice in Ohio before assuming job duties.
  • At least 3 years of previous legal practice, including client representation and courtroom experience.
  • Be a Guardian Ad Litem or be qualified to become a Guardian Ad Litem, which includes certifying that at least 50% of your practice during the preceding two years involves domestic relations, juvenile custody, or equivalent experience.
  • A record of strong academic achievement.
  • Strong skills in the areas of organization, planning, interpersonal relations, oral and written communications, and providing student services.
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Capital University offers a competitive salary in the range of $95,000 - $105,000 and a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, retirement, family education benefits, long-term disability life insurance, and free parking.
