Overview

Professional Development Nurse

Neuro Critical Care and Neuro Special Care Units

Participates in the development of and responsible for the implementation of unit based orientation programs including nurse residency, experienced nurse orientation and licensed nursing assistant orientation. Evaluates program outcomes and updates curriculum based on quality metrics, accreditation requirements and regulatory requirements. Participates in the development of and implements competency programs for new and experienced nursing staff.

The mission of the Nursing Education Center (NEC) is to promote and support the overarching nursing strategic plan and initiatives originated by the CNO and the Center for Nursing Excellence. We accomplish this through the development and implementation of programs based on adult learning theories and best practice for nursing education. Our work includes initial onboarding, clinical area orientation, competence assessment (initial and ongoing), preceptor excellence program, and ongoing professional development for nurses throughout their career journey at D-H.

The centralized department structure will facilitate the development of skills in critical thinking, clinical reasoning, effective communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration for D-H nurses. We collaborate with subject matter experts and ancillary departments in creating educational programs and annual competence plans to meet the needs of practice settings for ambulatory, emergency, inpatient, perioperative, and procedural. We utilize evidence-based concepts and programs related to patient safety and quality process improvement throughout our nursing education programs.

We support the successful transition to professional practice for nurses through a nurse residency program. We foster transition to clinical practice in desired specialty areas with experiential learning activities including simulation education. We facilitate in the development of nurses as preceptors through evidence-based curriculum

Responsibilities

  • Orientation and Onboarding

Coordinates and implements Central Onboarding Required Education (CORE) courses all nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, LNAs, patient care assistants, and others) new to DHMC and Clinics Coordinates and implements Nurse Residency Program, Experienced Nurse Orientation and Licensed Nursing Assistant Orientation Delivers training and ensures new staff competency regarding organizational systems, including, but not limited to, point of care testing, medication dispensing systems, electronic health record

  • Competency Management

Manages competencies for new employees Works with unit-based educators and leaders to ensure yearly competency program is carried out in a timely and coordinated fashion

  • Education

Conducts and participates in practice gap analysis and learning needs assessments Develops, implements and evaluates education programs related orientation, competency and continuing nursing education Demonstrates innovation within designated programs Integrates technology into educational programming Participates in the development of new educational programs as identified through needs assessment, gap analyses or regulatory requirements

  • Role development

Implements and maintains role transition programs for new to practice staff and staff transitioning from one specialty or role to another in alignment with accreditation criteria Participates in the development of and implements initial and ongoing preceptor development programs Supports succession planning Conducts career coaching Supports clinical advancement models

  • Collaboration

Collaborates with other departments to facilitate high quality, cost effective patient care Participates in the development of and implements interprofessional education in collaboration with interprofessional colleagues Participates in interprofessional committees Supports and is a champion for excellence initiatives and shared governance

  • Inquiry

Participates in research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives Collects and analyzes data related to educational programs

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing required OR
  • Non-nursing bachelors degree AND Associates Degree in Nursing with commensurate experience and matriculation into a Masters in Nursing program required
  • 3 years of clinical experience in identified specialty.
  • Excellent informatics, verbal and written communications skills desired
  • Nursing Professional Development-Board Certified preferred within 1 year

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse with NH eligibility
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate required.
