Production Supervisor

This role oversees production operations in a manufacturing facility, leading multiple departments and ensuring that shift goals, safety standards, and production capabilities are consistently met. The Production Supervisor serves as the primary leader on shift, spending most of their time on the production floor to support, guide, and develop team members while driving continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise production activities across 4–5 departments operating simultaneously, with approximately 4–5 team members in each department.
  • Serve as the primary supervisor in charge for the entire shift, providing clear direction, support, and oversight to all assigned employees.
  • Spend approximately 70% of time on the production floor, conducting regular walk-throughs of the plant to monitor operations, support employees, and address issues in real time.
  • Ensure production capabilities and targets are consistently met by monitoring performance, addressing bottlenecks, and coordinating resources across departments.
  • Conduct pass-over meetings with the previous supervisor at the start of each shift to review what was not completed, identify issues or downtime, and develop an action plan for the upcoming shift.
  • Motivate, coach, and develop team members to achieve high levels of productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Apply supervisory skills to manage performance, including providing feedback, coaching, and discipline when necessary in a fair and professional manner.
  • Promote and enforce safety practices and standards throughout the facility to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Support and participate in lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Coordinate coverage and assume responsibility for additional areas of the facility when other supervisors are absent, leveraging cross-training across departments.
  • Collaborate with other leaders and departments to resolve production issues and maintain smooth workflow across the facility.
  • Ensure that daily tasks, assignments, and production schedules are completed during the shift and communicate status updates as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a production supervisor.
  • Experience in industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing 15 or more employees across multiple departments.
  • Strong supervision and production supervision skills.
  • Proven supervisory skills, including performance management and team leadership.
  • Solid understanding of safety practices in a manufacturing setting.
  • ISO experience and familiarity with working under ISO standards or systems.
  • Strong people skills, including the ability to develop, motivate, and discipline employees effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and oversee production activities to meet targets.
  • Effective communication and management skills to coordinate across departments and shifts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in food manufacturing, which closely aligns with the facility's processes.
  • Exposure to or use of multiple managerial styles, such as servant leadership, autocratic, or other approaches, and the ability to adapt style to different situations.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles.
  • Background in process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and productivity.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical solutions in a fast-paced production environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing facility with a production-focused environment. The work area can be hot and may have strong odors, including a noticeable glue smell, reflecting the nature of the materials and processes used. The position primarily supports second shift, with hours from 1:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and some overtime is expected based on production needs. The supervisor spends most of the shift on the production floor, closely engaging with operations and teams in an active, hands-on setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of South Bend, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $37.00/hr.
