Process Optimization Engineer, CAD/CAM — Implant & Instrument Machining

In this role, you’ll champion continuous improvement across turning, milling, and grinding—accelerating NPIs, modernizing legacy programs, and deploying new tooling and process technologies to set a higher bar for throughput and consistency.

Your mission

Own the programming strategy for complex components—multi-axis, multi-spindle, and Swiss—while partnering with quality and engineering to ensure every part meets exacting standards.

Key responsibilities

• Create, refine, and standardize CNC programs for implants and instruments; align strategies with machine capabilities and customer requirements.
• Interpret drawings and CAD to define dimensions, tool selection, speeds/feeds, and cut configurations.
• Lead DFM discussions and process development with internal teams and external collaborators.
• Continuously update programs to remove errors, incorporate new methodologies, and hit delivery targets.
• Work with Quality Engineering to establish Process Control Plans, Manufacturing Inspection Plans, and fixturing/gaging needs.
• Set up machines for first-article proof and short-run NPI work; support occasional small production runs.
• Design fixtures for downstream/post-processing steps to stabilize quality and reduce handling time.
• Operate within the TOMZ Quality Management System and contribute to ongoing standard work improvements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

What you bring

• Associate degree in a technical or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years in CNC programming and machine set-up within a medical device or comparable precision environment.
• Expertise in NC code, tooling strategies, and manufacturing processes.
• CAD/CAM capability; SolidWorks and Esprit experience preferred.
• Blueprint interpretation with strong GD&T knowledge.
• Clear communicator adept at collaborating with internal teams and customers.
• Structured, logical problem-solving approach to complex challenges.

Work conditions

• Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel; lift up to 50 lbs (team lift/mechanical assist for items over 50 lbs).
• Exposure to oils, grease, production noise, cleaning solvents, dust, metal particles, sparks, coolant, and sharp-edged materials; PPE (safety glasses, dust masks, ear plugs, cut/chemical-resistant gloves) and engineering controls may be required.
• Frequent computer/keyboard use for programming and documentation.
