Purpose

The Pre-Admission Testing RN (PAT RN) is responsible for preparing patients for surgery by conducting pre-admission assessments, including physical examinations, medical history reviews, and diagnostic tests. This role reports to the PreOp/PACU Charge Nurse and works closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals. Peer roles include PACU RN and Surgical RN. The PAT RN ensures patients are informed about their procedures, addresses any concerns, and coordinates care plans to optimize surgical outcomes

Responsibilities

Conduct Pre-Admission Assessments

  • Perform physical examinations and medical history reviews.

  • Administer diagnostic tests such as EKGs and lab work.

  • Document findings and update patient records.

Patient Education and Communication

  • Inform patients about their surgical procedures and post-operative care.

  • Address patient concerns and answer questions.

  • Provide instructions regarding pre-operative preparations.

Coordinate Care Plans

  • Collaborate with anesthesiologists and surgeons to develop patient care plans.

  • Communicate patient needs and special requirements to the surgical team.

  • Ensure all pre-operative requirements are met.

Maintain Patient Safety

  • Monitor patients for any adverse reactions during pre-admission testing.

  • Implement safety protocols and procedures.

  • Respond to emergencies and provide appropriate interventions.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records.

  • Report test results and assessments to the surgical team.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in pre- and post-surgical patient care.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Texas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pre-admission testing or surgical nursing.

  • Certification in Pre-Admission Testing Nursing (PATN).
