Position Title: Nurse Technician (Nurse Tech) Department: Surgical Services / Inpatient Unit/ Pre and Post Reports To: Registered Nurse (RN) / Nurse Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
Nurse Tech provides direct patient care and clinical support to the nursing team within a surgical specialty hospital. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, a Nurse Tech assists with pre- and post-operative care, maintains patient safety, and supports efficient unit operations. This role is essential for ensuring high-quality, compassionate care in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
Assist with patient admission, discharge, and transfers.
Provide pre-operative preparation support, including basic hygiene, vital signs, and patient transport.
Deliver post-operative care as delegated by the RN, including vital signs, intake/output, and comfort measures.
Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, and mobility.
Perform safe patient handling and transport according to hospital protocols.
Collect specimens and perform basic point-of-care testing as authorized.
Report changes in patient condition promptly to the RN.
Clinical Support
Prepare units/rooms with appropriate supplies and equipment.
Ensure monitoring equipment, oxygen, and emergency supplies are readily available and functioning.
Maintain sterile and clean environments by following infection-prevention and safety standards.
Restock supplies, linen, and assist with equipment cleaning or setup.
Support RN with wound care, drains, dressings, and post-op restrictions as appropriate to scope.
Communication & Documentation
Accurately document care, vital signs, and observations in the medical record.
Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team to support coordinated patient care.
Provide clear, courteous communication to patients and families, ensuring privacy and professionalism.
Teamwork & Hospital Operations
Participate in unit huddles, safety rounds, and quality improvement initiatives.
Assist with maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe work environment.
Support compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or equivalent).
Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
Preferred
Previous experience in a surgical, acute care, or specialty hospital setting.
Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of fundamental clinical coursework.
Familiarity with documentation.
Knowledge of aseptic technique and perioperative workflows.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift, move, or position patients and equipment (up to facility standard requirements).
Ability to respond quickly in fast-paced, high-acuity situations.
