Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least two years of experience (five years preferred) in sports field maintenance with two years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possess a solid understanding of both baseball and softball infield care and turf management. Must possess current certification through VA Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services as a Certified Registered Technician and obtain Commercial Applicator Certification in categories 3A (ornamental pest control) and 3B (turf) within one year of employment. Considerable working knowledge of fertilizers, herbicide and pesticide chemicals; sound working knowledge of irrigation systems; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; good knowledge of safety rules/regulations and accident-prevention practices.
The successful candidate will have the following qualities and skills:
Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Duties
Assists in implementing an effective, proactive, and detailed management plan for all playing surfaces and common areas of assigned sports fields. Meets with staff daily to assign and review completion of tasks. Works with and trains employees in proper operation of equipment and grounds maintenance methods and procedures. Cross-trains and develops employees for multiple positions. Performs daily field inspections ensuring the safety and quality of the playing surfaces. Develops and maintains working relationships with user groups and other county agencies. Sitting, standing, walking, reaching with arms and hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, lifting 50 lbs. or more, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or crouching are all part of this position. Must be able to handle weather related elements such as rain and heat. Performs other work as required.

Monday - Friday; 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; includes some weekends, evenings, and holidays
