The *Prevention Specialis*t, also known as a substance abuse prevention specialist, works to prevent substance use and related problems in the community.
Their responsibilities include:
Implementing programs/curriculum:
- Designing, coordinating, and implementing programs to educate people about substance abuse and high-risk behaviors. The curriculum also details self-care, decision-making, and communication skills.
Working with communities:
- Partnering with schools, businesses, community groups, and other organizations to provide education, services and outreach.
Promoting healthy habits:
- Encouraging healthy habits and alternative lifestyle choices.
Educating families:
- Creating programs to educate and support families.
Promoting Service:
- Partnering with healthcare providers and social service partners to facilitate access to treatment/prevention services.
- Address health and wellness for youth, families, and communities by enhancing protective factors through evidence-based education and skills training.
- Enhance community awareness and mobilization around behavioral health by providing behavioral health education, information dissemination, problem identification, group facilitation, and alternative activities, including planning, organizing and implementing programs.
- Activities also include tobacco compliance checks and any other components required by the funding agency.
- A drivers license is needed due to traveling to different places.
Computer Skills:
Comfortable using a PC and Microsoft Office products.
Minimum Experience:
Any Youth Service, Mental Health or Substance Abuse Experience. Prevention work. Any school setting work. Homeless Services. Human Services work/Criminal Justice work.Community engagement. And similar.
Background Requirements:
Candidates must pass a drug screen and a background check. Convictions will be reviewed on case-by-case basis; convictions will not necessarily bar a candidate's employment.
