Position Description The Power Generation & Microgrids Controls Engineer will design, develop, automate, implement, and commission UtilityInnovation Group (UIG) products and projects across the U.S., while also cross-training with our engineering team in the EU. This role supports detailed engineering solutions for distributed generation control systems, PLC programming, SCADA and remote monitoring systems, energy storage applications, networking equipment, and overall system control architecture. You'll collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver solutions for microgrids, data centres, and utility projects that meet customer requirements or internal specifications, while following UIG standards and procedures. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and integrate control systems for a wide range of microgrid asset types and power system architectures Review project specifications and drawings with the design team Troubleshoot and optimize designs and equipment in both office and field environments Produce accurate product and programming designs for internal teams and customers Create programming files for various control and communication devices Collaborate with the engineering team and customers to specify, automate, and commission field devices and systems Work with OPC UA protocols and at least two of the following protocols: Modbus, DNP3, IEC61850, Profinet, MQTT Support programming of all UIG projects based on designs from the larger engineering team Summarize data and provide test result reports Track and meet schedules, milestone dates, and delivery deadlines Review and verify programs prior to release for manufacturing Provide documentation and coordination support to internal UIG teams Resolve questions or issues related to the automation of UIG projects Interpret and work from engineering drawings from ePlan, AutoCAD, sketches, verbal descriptions, specifications, and technical documentation Modify programs based on verbal instruction, sketches, drawings, or conceptual descriptions Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) as required Continuously improve processes to reduce turnaround times and enhance quality Communicate clearly with engineers, drafters, and manufacturing personnel in the English language Collaborate effectively and raise early flags when milestones are at risk Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field from an accredited university 3-10 years of experience in automation systems and SCADA integration Strong ability to interact effectively with peers and management Ability to travel up to 55% of the year Current authorization to work in the United States (we cannot offer visa sponsorship)  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong experience with MES/SCADA, PLCs, and industrial networks Proficiency in PLC programming tools and languages (CODESYS, Structured Text, Ladder Logic, etc.) Experience with Inductive Automation's Ignition platform (Perspective) Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profinet/Profibus, CANopen, J1939, EtherCAT, and MQTT Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills with a mindset for continuous improvement Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Ability to occasionally inspect in-process work, requiring movement into low or elevated positions on equipment Ability to occasionally move materials or equipment that weigh ~40 lbs Manual dexterity for digital equipment, computers, and machine controllers Occasional exposure to electrical testing and other industrial environments Work Environment Primarily office-based, with regular interaction at UIG's manufacturing facility, R&D facility, and job sites as needed.
