Position: Engineering Technologist

Location: Sterling, VA

Terms: Full time

Pay: $24/hr

Summary

This is an entry-level position within the Engineering Technologist staff. The role applies technical skills to evaluate options and design safe, reliable, and cost-effective electrical facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The incumbent will support and learn from experienced personnel while gaining proficiency in client-specific procedures and technical tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

With support and supervision, responsibilities include:

  • Learn, practice, and promote all safety policies and procedures at all times

  • Apply applicable codes, regulations, and company/client policies

  • Participate in job-site visits and interact with field personnel

  • Use design and work management software as directed

  • Prepare complete job packages (material lists, labor estimates, drawings)

  • Evaluate electrical loading (e.g., transformers, fusing)

  • Learn construction practices on both public ROW and private property

  • Provide regular job status updates to meet client expectations

  • Maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Organize and maintain project files and records

  • Support and learn from mentors and senior personnel

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • Required: High school diploma or GED

  • Preferred: Associate's degree or higher in a related technical field

  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in non-engineering science, math, or business

Experience:

  • 0-1 year of experience in power distribution, GIS/CAD, or utility construction

Certifications:

  • None required

On-the-Job Training:

  • Combination of classroom training, shadowing, and mentorship during the first year

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Basic algebra, geometry, and spreadsheet math

  • Ability to interpret technical documentation

  • Time management and multitasking skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and computer-based tools

  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle

  • Willingness to support storm restoration activities as needed

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting: Regularly

  • Standing/Walking/Climbing/Stooping: Occasionally

  • Lifting: Up to 10 lbs frequently; up to 25 lbs occasionally

  • Vision: Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, focus adjustment
