The incumbent performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis and associated interventions under the general oversight of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or the clinical director (MD, PhD, DO). A Polysomnographic Technician can provide supervision of a Polysomnographic Trainee. This position is responsible for providing direct patient care.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Reviews history, physical information, medications and procedure requests.
  • Explains procedures and orients the patient to the sleep center.
  • Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fittings.
  • Follows procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality.
  • Documents routine observations in order to facilitate scoring and interpretations of polysomnographic results.
  • Assists with appropriate interventions including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic modalities.
  • Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Assists with scoring clinical events with center specific protocols.
  • Assists with the generation of accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
  • Demonstrated ability to process visual data and intervene when necessary to maintain technical quality of testing data, as well as follow procedural protocols such as Parasomnia studies and the administration of positive airway pressure and oxygen titrations, to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient''s status and provide care as described in the department''s policies and procedures manual.

Qualifications

Required

One (1) of the following:

  • Completion of a polysomnography program associated with a state license or nationally accredited educational facility.
  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience as a Polysomnographic Trainee with documented proficiency in all required competencies.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.
