Sergeants serve in a first-line unit-level supervisory capacity, overseeing a team. Sergeants (at times in conjunction with a lieutenant) must manage schedules, evaluate direct reports, prepare, and recommend development plans, and provide coaching, discipline, and commendations as appropriate. Sergeants must be able to plan for a shift, make assignments, respond to questions from the public, and intake complaints. Sergeants are the first line of officer oversight to ensure compliance with policy, law, and local regulations. Sergeants also must be prepared to support the unit in its duties carrying a case load, responding to calls, emergencies, and crimes, working special events, and other non-supervisory duties as necessary. Sergeants may also be assigned collateral duties based on their departmental role, such as evidence custodian if assigned to Investigations.

Sergeants may be assigned to patrol, investigations, or over another unit or squad. Sworn police personnel may be deployed/requested to assist in the field based on the operational needs of the department and may fulfill other law enforcement or administrative duties as assigned. Sergeants assigned to an investigation will be required to work an on-call rotation. Sergeants assigned to patrol will work regular patrol shift hours.

All sworn police officers are considered essential personnel for inclement weather and emergencies and may be required to work overtime depending upon the circumstances and special events.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

To qualify as a Level I Police Supervisor (Sergeant)

A minimum of an Associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

To qualify as a Level II Police Supervisor (Sergeant)

3 years of experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

To qualify as a Level III Police Supervisor (Sergeant)

6 years of experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • North Carolina Intermediate or Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate preferred.
  • Prior certification as an advanced specialized law enforcement officer with an advanced level of training and experience or military police experience.

Required Certifications or Licensures

Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve lateral transfer certification within one year of employment.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary objective of the UNCW Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment within which students, faculty, and staff can live, learn, and work. Officers within the department are duly sworn, certified, and empowered with the same authority as other local law enforcement officers in the State of North Carolina as regulated by the NC Department of Justice. The department consists of sworn police officers, patrol, investigations, administrative functions, functional authority positions, telecommunicators, and security guards.
