SUMMARY:
The successful candidate in this position will perform a variety of general and/or specialized office support, clerical, and technical work in support of assigned Police Department operations and services
They will collect, record, transcribe, maintain, edit, and retrieve confidential law enforcement data and information into computerized records management systems
They will also receive and provide assistance at the Public Counter telephonically and provide support and assistance to sworn and non-sworn functions and activities of the Police Department
MINIMUM/PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application
Education: - Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent
Work Experience: - Three years of experience in a criminal justice agency at a level comparable to a Police Records Specialist I with the City of Reno or two years as aconfirmed Police Records Specialist I with the City of Reno
Licenses and Certifications: - Must possess or have the ability to obtain valid National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification for entry and inquiry of warrants into the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Nevada State Criminal Justice Information Center (NCJIS) within six months of hire
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain State certification for the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) within six months ofhire
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Assumes lead responsibility over assigned functional area and staff as assigned; plans, priorities, reviews, and participates in the duties and responsibilities of the assigned area; performs the more complex and technical work of the assigned functional area; participates in the development and updating of policies and procedures related to the operations of the assigned area
Evaluates department training needs to ensure that employees are certified at the appropriate level for NCIC and NCJIS operation and to ensure compliance with Police Records Unit policies and procedures; create lesson plans for NCIC and NCJIS training; instructs classes that provide federal and state mandated training, certification, and re-certification to all sworn and civilian personnel; certifies that employees are incompliance with state and federal requirements for NCIC/NCJIS; works with employees to correct deficiencies
Receives and processes police reports according to established guidelines; receives, logs, copies, and maintains warrants, information sheets, and case files; prepares records for scanning, microfiche, microfilm, etc., as appropriate
Maintains a variety of records, files, and logs of criminal histories, warrants, subpoenas, citations, and related law enforcement information
Time stamps and prepares all incoming police reports, cases, and documentation; scan, validate, and perform quality control on a wide variety of police records, reports, and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, dispositions, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports; screen and process accident and offense reports; reviews and rejects reports that do not meet minimum requirements; copies and disseminates reports to appropriate staff
Act as a liaison with the court and other offices requiring transmission of documents and the coordination of crimina filings and court appearances, maintains records, and tracks such action
Conducts specialized research; assists various law enforcement staff in locating and interpreting criminal histories and other needed information; disseminates information to department staff, outside law enforcement agencies, the public
