Basic Function
Under the direction of a Police Sergeant or the Chief of Police, performs proactive security, intervention, law enforcement, community relations and public information duties that provide a safe environment for students, staff, and the public while on campus properties, as well as protection of equipment and property of the district; Enforce applicable federal, state, city, county and district laws; enforce rules and regulations governing use of college buildings and grounds.
Representative Duties
Patrols campus grounds to preserve law and order. Ensures the safety of students, staff, visitors, and facilities. Upholds high standards of behavior, safety, judgment, sensitivity to the cultural diversity of the college community and compliance with laws, regulations, Board policies, and administrative procedures. Enhances day-to-day public relations by providing information and assistance to students, staff, and the public in a way that establishes and maintains rapport with the school/student community. Solicits input from the campus community regarding perceived problems and issues. Participates as a department representative at college functions. E
Anticipates and intervenes in potential and actual incidents where persons and or property may be at risk of harm or damage. E
Protects District property and facilities by making inspections on foot, by bicycle, and in a patrol vehicle. Checks buildings for physical safety and security. Inspects and monitors the security of doors, windows and gates. Addresses any unusual or suspicious activity. E
Prevents entry and responds to presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings. Investigates situations and disturbances as needed. Issues warnings or makes arrests as needed. Documents incidents relating to observed violations. E
Responds to complaints and hazardous situations. Conducts investigations of reported injuries and accidents. Responds to incidents putting students, staff, and the general public at risk or harm. Renders First Aid. E
Conducts investigations involving incidents such as criminal violations, personal injury, traffic accidents, property damage, and theft. Gathers evidence, interviews victims, witnesses and suspects, and completes necessary paperwork. May testify and present evidence in court. E
Provides policing at campus and other school site functions as required. Opens and closes buildings and rooms for meetings. E
Directs traffic and controls parking and safe movement of vehicles in parking areas. Issues parking and moving violation citations. Impounds and/or stores vehicles when appropriate. E
Detects and reports fire hazards. Extinguishes small blazes and reports fires to the local Fire Department using established emergency communications protocols. Responds to fire and burglar alarms. Summons fire department personnel as needed. Directs traffic at fire, special events and other congested situations. E
Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. E
Assures proper functioning of equipment. Notifies designated personnel regarding impaired equipment and malfunctions. E
Answers accurately questions from students, staff and the public concerning local and State laws, procedures, and activities of the department. Provides accurate information and responds to questions from students, staff, and the public. E
Maintains currency of knowledge and skills relating to the duties and responsibilities, including training requirements for California P.O.S.T. Basic certification purposes. E

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.
License Certificates/Credentials
Per Title 5 Education Code 59704, Districts shall not hire as a campus police officer an individual with any sustained finding related to moral turpitude, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, abuse of authority or power, excessive use of force, or other misconduct incompatible with the role of a campus police officer under the requirements of, and district policies described in, this subchapter. Districts shall review records related to the current or prior employment of campus police and security officers to the full extent authorized by law.
Candidates must meet the California State Minimum selection standards set forth in Government Code 1029, 1031 and POST Commission Regulations 1950 - 1955, which include regulations relative to satisfactorily passing a background investigation, medical evaluation, and psychological evaluation of the final candidate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Employees in this classification must be able to run for extended times over various distances and conditions, such as pursuing a running suspect through yards and over fences and walls; observe and recognize people, activities, vehicles, street signs, environmental conditions from a reasonable distance during day or night.
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; crouch, walk, bend, reach, twist, drag, lift, and carry items weighing 45 pounds or more; may administer first aid and in an emergency, push, pull, drag, and move individuals and/or others weighing 150 pounds or more; prolonged sitting, standing, and grasping; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.
Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision (including the ability to distinguish colors), speaking, hearing, sense of smell, dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed, ability to use both hands and legs appropriate to the duties to be performed.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
Employees in this classification will be exposed to stressful and emergency situations and must be able to work irregular hours and schedules, and effectively respond to emergency incidents and call outs. While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a variety of locations to include on-site work at calls and incidents, in a District vehicle, bicycle or golf cart and at the College Police and Campus Safety Office. While working indoors, the environment may resemble a normal office environment in which the employee is regularly required to sit, and use hands to keyboard, type, or handle materials.
