Imagine being part of a team dedicated to making our streets safer every day. As a Police Officer Recruit, you will receive comprehensive training and guidance. Upon passing the Academy and receiving your P.O.S.T. certification, you will immediately be promoted to a Police Officer with the potential to earn an annual salary of $55,288 (excluding overtime). You can rest assured that your hard work will be rewarded. The actual salary earned may vary based on factors such as holidays, paid or unpaid leave, and overtime.

Examples of Duties

Under the direction of the Chatham County Police Department, you will:

Attend, participate, and successfully complete a P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy, where you receive classroom and practical instruction on the criminal justice system.

Learn to apply criminal and civil laws with particular reference to the laws of arrest, use of force, custody, search and seizure, and more.

Learn police methods and procedures and act with integrity, ingenuity, inventiveness, and strength of character in your work performance.

Learn to react as a first responder, implement crime scene management, forensics, collection, preservation, and presentation of evidence, and more.

Learn first aid, CPR, hazardous materials awareness, emergency management, and the Incident Command System.

Learn the Community Oriented Policing philosophy, crime prevention, victimology/crisis intervention, cultural diversity/discrimination, and interacting with people with disabilities.

Learn to use modern law enforcement equipment, communications devices, computers, and information systems.

Assist in enforcing all local, state, and federal laws within the jurisdiction of unincorporated Chatham County and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies.

Use good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing needs and situations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

One year of work experience involving public contact.

At least 21 years of age.

Citizen of the United States or a legal resident of this country.

Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Drivers License.

No felony, domestic violence, or misdemeanor assault convictions.

Legally able to possess and carry a firearm in the state of Georgia.

Vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye with normal color vision.

Attend and successfully complete appropriate P.O.S.T. certification courses.

An acceptable score on a timed educational level assessment examination.

An acceptable psychological assessment.

An acceptable score on the fitness performance standards test as outlined by the Department.

A favorable background investigation that includes a polygraph, criminal history, reference check, and employment verifications.

Must be able to work 12-hour shifts.

Supplemental Information

Please note that an investigation will be conducted based on your provided information. You must complete the application form honestly, accurately, and to the best of your knowledge. You must disclose all convictions, including a plea of guilty or nolo contendere, and a finding or a verdict of guilt in any criminal proceedings, even if the sentence or the judgment of guilt has been withheld or not entered thereon. This requirement applies to first offenders, as per Georgia State Law 25-8-7.1.

This is a safety sensitive position and subject to random drug testing. During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team. In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing. Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.

CHATHAM COUNTY BENEFITS PLAN

Eligibility for benefits begins on your date of hire.

Full-time employees working a regular schedule of 30 or more hours per week are eligible for County benefits. Part-time, seasonal, and temporary employees are not eligible to participate in the County benefit plan. However, regular part-time employees accrue prorated vacation and sick leave based on their schedule.

HEALTH

Employees have a choice between a high or low option point-of-service health plan for themselves, their spouse, and eligible dependent children.

VISION

The vision plan offers a comprehensive eye exam and options for frames, lenses, and contact lenses.

DENTAL

Employees may choose either the high or low dental plan option with two cleanings per year and periodic x-rays at no cost.

EMPLOYEE HEALTH CENTER

Employees and their spouses on the Countys health plan have access to the Employee Health Center for physical and behavioral health services, health coaching, and lab services at no cost.

RETIREMENT

Chatham County provides a Defined Benefit Pension Plan with a five-year vesting period.

LIFE & DISABILITY

Long Term Disability and basic Life Insurance coverage are provided at no cost to employees. Employees may also purchase additional life coverage for themselves and their dependent family members.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS

Chatham County offers Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts through payroll deduction. The Medical FSA has a rollover feature equal to the annual Federal maximum.
