Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently licensed as a Minnesota Peace Officer (POST) and have at least one year of law enforcement experience.

Out-of-state officers should review Minnesota POST Board reciprocity requirements to determine eligibility.

Compensation & Lateral Placement

$47.24 - $54.59/hour (2026 contract rate)

Lateral placement that recognizes your prior experience

Placement based on years of service and current compensation

Longevity increases at years 5, 10, and 15

This position will remain open indefinitely or until filled.

Essential Position Functions

  1. Patrol city to deter and detect criminal activity and perform traffic law enforcement; make arrests, where appropriate; administer first aid; and rescue persons in dangerous or accident situations

Must have the ability to drive a squad car at normal and high speed

Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time up to five hours

Must have the ability to chase suspects on foot over all types of ground conditions up to one mile and over fences up to four feet in height

Must have the ability to identify colors for identification of cars, clothing, etc.

Must be able to make arrests if an offender is verbally and/or physically resisting

Must be able to qualify with department authorized firearms, including handguns and long barrel firearms

Must be able to hear within normal hearing range

Must be able to administer first aid, as a First Responder. In that capacity, an employee must be able to lift or move an adult person, up to 250 pounds, with the assistance of at least one other First Responder

Must be able to deal effectively with people, in high stress situations, and not over-react or lose control

Must maintain physical fitness

  1. Communicate with the public and members of the Police Department

Must be able to give verbal direction to uncooperative persons

Must be able to clearly communicate with the general public individually and in groups, in normal and emergency situations

Must be able to read and comprehend documents such as Policy and Procedure Manuals, as well as legal documents

Must have the ability to legibly write a report in long hand, as well as dictate a report that clearly represents the incident using basic grammatical skills

  1. Must have the ability to operate a variety of equipment, including but not limited to; police radios, mobile digital computers, radar units, digital recording devices, cameras, fire extinguishers, oxygen resuscitators, etc.

  2. Have knowledge of and commitment to Community Orientated Policing/Problem Orientated Policing as a department philosophy

  3. Performs all other duties as required or assigned

HOURS OF WORK:

May include rotating shift work; average of 40 hours per week; subject to overtime, call back and extended work day for emergency and special assignments; includes weekend and holiday work.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

90% Field, 10% Office

Must be able to work in all weather conditions experienced in Minnesota

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Driver's License

Associate's Degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or a related field

Currently licensed as a Minnesota Peace Officer (POST). Out of state officers should review the Minnesota POST Board reciprocity requirements to determine eligibility.

One (1) or more years of law enforcement experience.

Successful completion of job-related medical, physical agility, drug, and psychological examinations

Must be able to perform essential position functions under the working conditions as described
