Under the general supervision of the police Sergeant, the Police Officer performs a wide variety of routine and complex public safety work in the performance of police patrol, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, citizen assistance, and other law enforcement related activities.
*Duties and Responsibilities*
-Patrols the City of Dacono in a vehicle, on foot, or on a bicycle to enforce municipal codes and state law to protect individuals and property, preserve the peace, control vehicular traffic, detect and investigate suspicious activity, prevent, deter, and detect misconduct involving felonies, misdemeanors and any law violations.
-Responds to and handles routine, difficult, and emergency situations with independent judgment and discretion where immediate assistance is not available.
-Responds to and investigates calls and complaints involving traffic accidents, misdemeanors, felonies, and other law violations and determines the proper course of enforcement action.
-Maintains awareness of and reports any hazards that may exist creating a public safety concern.
-Prepares and maintains a variety of reports, records and or logs to fulfill documentation requirements of enforcement and investigative activities.
-Analyzes and interprets state statutes and municipal codes, state statutes and applies the analysis and interpretation to daily enforcement, investigative and responsive activities as required.
-Solves problems with a creative and innovative approach to identify community concerns; presents optional courses of action and identifies resources to members of the community and the public.
-Performs all other duties as required by supervisory personnel.
*Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills*
-Ability to apply a wide range of comprehension from common sense understanding to complex analysis
-Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
-Ability to deal with problems from several concrete variables in standardized situations to abstract, wide ranging variables in non-standardized, complex form
-Ability to read and comprehend very simple to somewhat complex instructions, short, medium, or lengthy correspondence and memos
-Ability to write very simple to somewhat complex correspondence
-Ability to effectively present information in one on one or small audience settings
-Ability to operate a wide variety of equipment and police vehicle in normal and emergency situations
-Knowledge of or reasonable ability to obtain the knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and use of equipment
-Knowledge of or reasonable ability to obtain knowledge of criminal law, codes, and legal procedures.
-Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word with the ability to navigate the internet and use many browser-based sites
*Education and Experience*
-Requires a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
-Prefers an associate degree or equivalent credit hours towards a bachelor's degree
-Must be 21 years of age at the time of hire (company policy)
-Requires a State of Colorado POST certification
-Requires a current Colorado driver's license
*Physical Demands and Work Environment*
-Physical demands regularly vary due to the unpredictable nature of and unforeseeable events that characterize police work
-Regularly meet physical and mental demands associated with arrest and control techniques
-Frequently sit, stand, walk, run, talk, see and hear.
-Frequently use hands to handle or operate objects, controls or tools; reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, twist, kneel, crouch
-Frequent light lifting is most common and carrying 15 pounds or under an occasional moderate weight up to 50 pounds.
-Occasionally lift, pull, or drag another person
-Occasionally defend him or herself or others using defensive tactics.
-The position may require the consider tion and use of lawful deadly force against another.
-Occasionally respond to crime scenes and incidents that may be graphic and prompt emotional responses
-Regularly exposed to wet and or humid conditions, extreme cold or heat
-Work is normally performed in uniform and may require using protective equipment
-Work is performed in office areas, classrooms, inside public and private buildings and outdoors in the city in patrol vehicles, on bicycles or on foot in both non-stressful and stressful situations
-Work is performed where the potential always exists to work in hazardous surroundings including excessive intermittent noise, dust, dirt, electrical energy, fumes, smoke, gas, solvents, grease and oils, vehicle traffic, near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious locations and with explosives. The potential always exists for exposure to bio-hazardous material, blood and airborne pathogens, sexually transmitted diseases, or other health hazards.
-Frequently work alone and with others during irregular/protracted hours including weekends, nights, varied shifts, holidays, and unanticipated overtime.
