The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University's pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our highly dedicated law enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.

Primary Purpose of Position

This position performs law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collection and preservation of evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings and performing related work.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Protects life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations.
  • Conducts preliminary and follow-up criminal investigations.
  • Conducts detentions, interviews and arrests in accordance with the law and departmental directives.
  • Communicates with others by vocal and written means. Relays clear, intelligible messages through proper words and body language.
  • Complies with all departmental directives and university policies. Completes all assigned tasks and duties.

Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience:

Must possess a minimum of High School diploma or GED from an appropriately accredited institution, a probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and show successful completion of the appointing agency's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.

Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement, completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training, be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Police Officer II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer, have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training, and have at least a General Certification.

Police Officer III: Positions at this level are veteran officers with a minimum of 4 years of experience as sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers, have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training, and have attained their General Certification.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses

  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must possess a valid state-issued vehicle operator's license.
