Position Summary The Police Dispatcher is responsible for receiving, assessing, and documenting emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatching UIW police and security officers with respective pertinent information as appropriate to any campus or University location upon request. The Police Dispatcher reports to the University Police Lieutenant.
Note that this position requires the ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment as required by TCOLE standards.

Perform a full range of radio and telephone operational duties in this 24-hour operations center, which serves as the primary nerve center of UIW, including but not limited to:
• Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from staff, faculty, students, and the general public requesting service. • Prioritize incoming calls, obtain detailed information, and maintain composure while pushing out the necessary information to appropriate individuals as appropriate in a timely manner. • Provide service information and directions to the campus community and visitors for non-emergency calls for all campus police operations. • Enter and maintain accurate daily activity logs, including a variety of communication equipment, such as radio consoles, telephones, fire alarm monitoring systems, and other related computer systems. • Report Exec. • Ensure compliance with all UIW Police Department policies and guidelines. • Check on criminal records and backgrounds using the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System. • Enter stolen vehicle and other information as required into the database. • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Effective oral communication skills via phone and radio systems. • Clear, concise speaking voice, and the ability to type 25 wpm. • Ability to effectively prioritize incoming calls and relay necessary information to appropriate individuals in a timely manner. • Ability to maintain professional composure during high-stress situations and obtain detailed information and disseminate appropriately. • Must exercise good judgment in providing for the safety and welfare of UIW students, employees, visitors, and property. • Must abide by attendance standards, as this is a critical 24-hour operations center. • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education Graduation from High School or GED equivalent.
Required Work Experience Six months of experience in a position that required public contact, dispatching, or related duties.
Preferred Qualifications • Some College. • One year of job-related experience, including experience with radio communications and computers.
Required Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations • Must have a valid drivers license or state ID as required by TCOLE licensure. • Ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment as required by TCOLE standards. • Willingness and ability to secure a Telecommunicator License by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within one year from date of assignment.
Work Hours Rotating shifts required, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and special events, as operational needs dictate. Current shifts include:
• 6am to 2pm • 2pm to 10pm • 10pm to 6am
Physical Demands Long hours of working in isolation. Must have good hearing to be attentive and secure accurate information and relay as appropriate. Good hand dexterity to be able to use phones, police radio systems, and internal radio systems for communication.

One of the leading comprehensive universities in Texas, the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio strives to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens with values developed in a Judeo-Christian tradition. In 1881 the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded Incarnate Word College as a center of higher education for young women. The college was admitted to membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1919, and joined the Texas Association of Colleges as a senior college in 1920. The Graduate Studies division was established in 1950. Male students were first admitted into the college's undergraduate programs in 1970. Incarnate Word College became the University of the Incarnate Word in 1996. Today, UIW is a Hispanic-Serving Institution under federal guidelines.
UIW is the largest Catholic university in Texas and the fourth-largest private university in the state. The enrollment reflects the diversity of South Texas, as more than 60 percent of the students are from racial or ethnic minority groups. UIW is ranked No. 1 nationally among faith-based universities in the conferring of bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics by the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine, and No. 6 nationally among all private, not-for-profit universities.
