Description
This is a clerical position with limited fiscal clerical duties, such as cash register operations and balancing and customer relations work.
Work involves responsibility for performing fiscal cashier clerical work requiring the application of very basic bookkeeping principles relating to cash register and cash drawer operation, data entry, preparation of offense, supplemental and confidential reports, handling of emergency situations relating to law enforcement activities, testifying in court if necessary, assisting in investigations, and conducting body searches as necessary. An employee of this class is assigned to customer relations work involving considerable public contact. Other duties of a general office nature are performed and require operation of standard office machines, including a computer workstation. Answers and responds to a multi-line telephone system. Work is coordinated by supervisors in the Police Department and is performed under the general direction of the Commander of the Administrative/Technical Services Bureau, and is reviewed for adherence to policies and procedures.
Examples of Duties
Answers incoming calls for the Police Department on a multi-line recorded telephone system; responds to general inquiries and complaints, and writes appropriate police reports on incidents, while referring others to the appropriate Bureau, department or individual.
Receives payment for such items as parking citations, police reports or other types of record copy, City Ordinance fines, bonds, criminal history checks, fingerprint fees, taxicab licenses, alarm permits, and Liquor Commission fines.
Prepares Daily Log and monthly reports, registers bicycles, accepts Calls for Service, uses APass-A-Long file, data enters Trespass Warning Notices, and other information.
Maintains Reception Desk files.
Explains procedures/regulations on parking, animal control, and other city policies to members of the public.
Provides effective and efficient customer services and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Graduation from high school (or GED), including or supplemented by courses in bookkeeping and modern office practices; experience in clerical work involving public contact; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Basic knowledge of cash register operation and balancing procedures.
Knowledge of modern office management practices, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to maintain financial records, and to prepare clerical and routine financial reports.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with customers and the general public and to convey concise and accurate information.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Skill in the operation of devices using alphanumeric keyboards to provide effective and efficient customer service.

Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Hand eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Additional Information
Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois or Iowa and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.
