Position Information

New Hanover County is seeking an experienced Plumbing Trades Specialist to join our Facilities Management Department, where you will play a vital role in supporting the daily operations and long-term functionality of County facilities.

New Hanover Countys Facilities Management department oversees the maintenance and upkeep of all county owned buildings and facilities as well as energy sustainability through our utility management program. We are a dynamic team of trades professionals, custodians, supervisors and administrative staff who work every day to make our facilities the best in North Carolina. Ideal candidates should possess a strong work ethic, have the ability to prioritize schedules, and a true desire to serve the employees and citizens of New Hanover County.

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Responds to work orders for repair of County buildings and facilities by making appropriate repairs.
  • Responds to repair emergencies on a 24-hour basis and provides appropriate assistance; serves in the on-call pool.
  • Estimates materials needed for specific repairs and orders from appropriate vendors.
  • Performs all levels of plumbing work, including the installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of air, gas, water, steam, and waste disposal systems.
  • Cuts, assembles, and installs pipes; connects valves; caulks joints; and tests completed work by allowing water to flow through.
  • Installs gas, water, steam, and sanitary fixtures and equipment with appropriate supports, hangers, or foundations.
  • Analyzes defects or malfunctions in plumbing systems; eliminates leaks by repacking valves or replacing faulty fittings or sections of lines; replaces worn parts and performs related duties to correct issues.
  • Performs routine plumbing repairs, including unclogging toilets and repairing running water
  • Change out diaphragms on pneumatic valves
  • Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on plumbing fixtures according to a quarterly schedule and on lift stations
  • Service ice makers and water fountains, including changing filters and performing preventative maintenance
  • Coordinate and schedule backflow inspections; maintain logs of inspection due dates, coordinate necessary repairs, and update spreadsheets with new serial numbers
  • Performs work with regular and predictable attendance, consistently meeting the scheduling needs of the position as required by the county.
  • Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of plumbing systems and repair methods; General mechanical principles. Skilled in reading architectural drawings; performing plumbing repairs and installations; troubleshooting plumbing systems; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Salary Information:

The hiring range for this position is $42,050 - $56,768, plus a competitive benefits package. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

The work is performed primarily in an office or indoor setting, with typical levels of noise and disruptions. Occasionally, work is performed outside where the employee may be exposed to varying temperature and/or weather conditions.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Drivers License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.

  • Backflow and Cross Connection Certification
  • P-1 Plumbing license preferred
