Fairfax County’s Wastewater Management Program is a nationally recognized Utility of the Future and its wastewater treatment plant, the 67 million gallon per day Noman M. Cole Water Recycling Facility (NMCWRF), is a multiple year NACWA Platinum Award winning facility. Under general guidance of Assistant Division Director (Operations), serves as a first line supervisor, managing and supervising the operation of a large 24/7 wastewater treatment plant. The plant is required by law to meet stringent effluent limitations established by state and federal regulatory agencies.

  • Performs and supervises corrective maintenance and minor repairs on process equipment.
  • Assist the business operations manager in enforcing safety and training programs.
  • Provides technical coordination to crews and meets with process team daily and other teams as needed.
  • Supervises the daily operations of various treatment process that include pretreatment, primary treatment, biological treatment, enhanced nutrient removal treatment, disinfection and solids processing including incineration.
  • Performs personnel management functions and mentors plant operators.
  • Develops and maintains spreadsheets and performs data management.
  • Reports any process abnormalities and equipment malfunctions to business operations manager and branch chief.
  • Coordinates system outages and communicate effectively to all stakeholders including maintenance staff, engineers, consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure continuous plant operation.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong knowledge base/subject matter expert: Expert on the processes and systems of the treatment processes. Troubleshoots problems and disseminates knowledge to operations staff
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance: Knowledge of compliance with the facilities permits. Takes leads in ensuring that data and samples are properly collected that support compliance. Verifies compliance with permits. Exposure to regulatory record keeping
  • Trainer mentality: Communicates knowledge on plant processes to train and educate junior level operators effectively
  • Relationship-building skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish trust and collaboration across all levels of the organization.
  • Organizational excellence: Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills to efficiently manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
