Summary
This position is responsible for performing technical and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of all water and wastewater treatment plant equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
- Coordinates scheduling of repair/maintenance work on plant equipment with plant supervisors.
- Installs and/or makes repairs to motors, engines, pumps, controls, and compressors in treatment plants and pump stations.
- Conducts tours of the plant and lift stations to ensure all equipment is operating properly.
- Inspects equipment and machinery on a regular basis; determines necessary repairs.
- Operates hand, bench, and machine tools in the repair and maintenance of pumps, valves, and other plant machinery and equipment.
- Checks pumps, motors, filters, belts, compressors, connections, and oil level temperatures.
- Replaces and repairs bearings, shafts, sleeves, and other parts.
- Repairs and replaces worn out parts; rebuilds pumps, gear boxes, and mechanical drives.
- Makes temporary repairs and adjustments until proper equipment is purchased and installed.
- Makes custom parts and/or retrofits existing parts.
- Changes oil and greases equipment per the manufacturer, replaces grease fittings, and schedules equipment for lubrication.
- Obtain price quotes for parts, materials, and supplies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and PLC equipment and systems.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, or any valid driver's license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.

- Thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical principles involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water or wastewater treatment plant equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the tool, parts, methods, and materials associated with treatment plant equipment maintenance and repair.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with plant maintenance and repair and the related safety practices and regulations.
- Working knowledge of welding, electricity, plumbing, and mechanical trades.
- Ability to operate and care for bench and hand tools, machines, and related equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and schematic drawings.
- Ability to prepare and maintain detailed records.
- Ability to test electrical controls, breakers, and outlets.
- Ability to detect defects in equipment and determine the proper remedial measures.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the public.
Job Related Physical Requirements
This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and to convey detailed or important instructions to others; hearing is required to respond to spoken words, to receive and understand information, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/or within arm's length, to visually inspect mechanical parts to detect defects, use of measuring devices, operation of machines or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions
The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, poor ventilation, oils, cutting fluids, and hazards including exposure to chemicals, moving mechanical parts, sewage, and work in narrow or confined spaces. Employees may be exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials and be required to wear a respirator when necessary. Employees are required to be on call 24 hours a day.
