Pipefitter (Gas Department)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Provide skilled labor for the construction and maintenance of the gas distribution system within the city.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Experience, Education, and Training

• Completed high school diploma or equivalent
• 2 years of previous experience

Requirements

• Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws.
• May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts.
• Subject to emergency call-in. 
• At least 18 years of age.
• Must have a valid Driver's License, CDL (A or B).

           OR

• Must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.

           AND

• A class "B" CDL, at minimum, must then be obtained within the 6-month probationary period.

FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions

1. Receives notification of a new project, assists with the gathering of tools, equipment, and supplies needed to complete the assignment, ensuring thoroughness.
2. Assists in securing the work site through placement of signs assuring for safety of coworkers and the public.
3. Observes others in their efforts in dealing with the public, contractors, and others, ensuring that communication is flowing and effective to complete the project.
4. Assists with excavation procedures following all safety precautions and recommendations of training personnel.
5. Assists with pipefitting duties as approved, ensuring compliance with DOT, PSC, and City of Fulton regulations.
6. Assists with the mapping department with locates as needed.
7. Assists other departments in the city as needed.
8. Assists with utility work orders (training will be provided).
9. Maintain certifications through computer testing, outside training, and written tests.
10. Ability to assist on-call personnel on after-hours issues. The employee will be placed on call rotation once the apprenticeship is completed.
11. Assists with gas leak inspections using CGI and FI equipment, notifying proper personnel of findings.
12. Assists in taking appropriate steps to secure incomplete projects at the close of the workday or if called away from the work site, ensuring public safety and the security of the project.
13. Assists in completing any required follow-up and paperwork steps to complete the project.
14. Responds to requests by immediate supervisor in an accurate, complete, and timely manner.
15. Deals with the public in a positive manner.
16. Actively participates in learning all levels of regulations and rules associated with gas distribution systems.
17. Maintains an awareness of and completes all designated steps of the apprenticeship program.
18. Maintains an awareness of the operation of all related machinery and equipment required to operate the department, ensuring thoroughness.
19. Assists with the operation of related machinery and equipment at a productive level, ensuring safety and the most appropriate use of the machinery and equipment.
20. Maintains an awareness of the corrective and preventative maintenance procedures and schedule.
