The Otolaryngologist will have the following duties and others as assigned by the Chief of Surgery:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, diagnose, admit, treat and manage patients' diseases, disorders, and injuries of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck, including conditions involving the ears, facial skeleton, upper respiratory tract, and upper alimentary system.

  • Provide non-operative care consistent with approved clinical privileges.

  • Perform inpatient and outpatient consultations and follow-up care for patients referred by other clinical services and affiliated outpatient clinics.

  • Provide emergency and on-call Otolaryngology services as assigned, consistent with granted privileges.

  • Order, interpret, and act upon diagnostic studies and implement treatment plans consistent with VHA standards of care.

Education and Training:

  • Educates and mentors medical students, interns, residents, technicians and other physicians.

  • Participates in surgical staffing briefings and contributes to continuous learning within the service.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Timely documentation of all clinical encounters, procedures and consultations in the electronic health record in accordance with VHA Health Information Management requirements.

  • Complies with all VHA, VISN and facility policies, including patient safety, infection control, prevention, quality management, and risk management requirements.

Professional and Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Participate in quality assurance, peer review, FPPE/OPPE, performance improvement activities, and Medical Staff functions as required

  • Participate in interdisciplinary care coordination and collaboration with other services to ensure continuity of care.

  • Perform administrative and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Surgical Service consistent with a professional role and privileges.

  • Maintain current licensure, board certification, credentialing, privileging and completion of all mandatory training.

Qualification Requirements

  • State Otolaryngologic Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Otolaryngologic Medicine from an approved institution.

  • Graduate of an ACGME-accredited otolaryngology residency program.

  • Board Certification by the American Board of Otolaryngologic Surgery

  • Full, current, unrestricted medical license in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

  • Meets all Customer Service, Computer Security and demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care, development and cultural needs of patients.
