Job Description

Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and clinically driven Physician Assistant (PA) to provide advanced medical care in a specialty-focused setting. The Specialty PA works under physician supervision (collaborative agreement) to diagnose, treat, and manage patients within a defined specialty such as orthopedics, cardiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, surgery, neurology, or other subspecialties.

This role requires strong clinical judgment, procedural competency, and the ability to manage complex patient cases within a fast-paced, specialty-driven healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Specialty Clinical Care
  • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, histories, and physical examinations
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions within the assigned specialty
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians
  • Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory studies
  • Prescribe medications and therapies within scope of practice and state regulations
  • Provide specialty-focused patient care (examples below):
  • Orthopedics: fractures, joint disorders, post-op care
  • Cardiology: heart failure, hypertension, arrhythmias
  • Neurology: stroke, migraines, seizure disorders
  • Dermatology: skin lesions, biopsies, acne, dermatologic procedures
  • Emergency Medicine: acute stabilization, trauma, urgent conditions
  • Surgery: pre-op, intra-op assistance, post-op care

Procedural Responsibilities (Based on Specialty)

Perform or assist with procedures such as:

  • Suturing and wound care
  • Joint injections and aspirations
  • Biopsies (dermatology or specialty-specific)
  • Casting and splinting (orthopedics)
  • Central line or minor surgical assistance (hospital-based roles)
  • Emergency stabilization procedures
  • Ensure sterile technique and patient safety during all procedures

Care Coordination & Collaboration

  • Work closely with supervising physicians and specialty teams
  • Coordinate referrals to other specialties when needed
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and case discussions
  • Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment plans, and follow-up care
  • Ensure continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
  • Ensure compliance with state PA scope of practice and supervisory agreements
  • Follow clinical guidelines, protocols, and specialty standards of care
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

Requirements:

  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Active Physician Assistant (PA-C) certification (NCCPA or equivalent)
  • State licensure in good standing
  • DEA registration (if prescribing controlled substances)
  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills
  • Ability to manage specialty-specific patient populations
  • Excellent communication and patient education skills
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and clinical documentation

Preferred (Nice-to-Have):

  • Prior experience in specialty practice (orthopedics, cardiology, dermatology, surgery, etc.)
  • Procedural experience relevant to specialty area
  • Experience in hospital, outpatient, or surgical settings
  • ACLS/BLS certification (required in many acute care roles)
  • Experience in high-volume specialty clinics or hospital systems
  • Strong interest in subspecialty advancement or fellowship training

  • Full-time / Part-time / Contract-based
  • Onsite (Hospitals, Specialty Clinics, Surgical Centers, Outpatient Practices)
  • May include shift-based, clinic-based, or procedure-based schedules depending on specialty
  • Some roles may include call coverage or hospital rounding responsibilities
  • Work Environment & Conditions:
