Main Function:
Provides high-quality, evidence-based outpatient pain management care under the supervision of a Pain Medicine physician.
Manages patients with acute, chronic, and complex pain conditions using a multimodal, biopsychosocial approach.
Supports safe and effective opioid stewardship in alignment with federal and state guidelines.
Leads and supports clinical staff in developing efficient, patient-centered workflows.
Ensures clinical practice aligns with the strategic goals of the health system.
Participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives within the Pain Management department.
Assists with clinical triage, follow-up care, and coordination among interdisciplinary pain care providers.
Participates in after-hours call for non-emergent outpatient pain management issues as scheduled.
Job Specific Competencies:
• Demonstrated competence in pain assessment, differential diagnosis, and development of comprehensive treatment plans.
• Ability to interpret diagnostic imaging, laboratory results, and procedural findings relevant to pain conditions.
• Knowledge of multimodal pain therapies, including: • Non-opioid pharmacologic therapy; • Opioid prescribing and monitoring per regulations; • Behavioral and functional strategies; • Interventional options.
• Strong understanding of opioid-related risk mitigation, including PDMP checks, urine drug screening, treatment agreements, and tapering protocols.
• Performs office-based procedures such as trigger point and joint injections.
• Collaborates with physician to supervise and manage spinal cord stimulator patients.
• Ability to develop collaborative relationships with clinical staff, pain specialists, referring providers, and hospital leadership.
• Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements related to pain management (CDC Guidelines, NYS pain prescribing laws, DEA regulations, etc.).
• Generates accurate, timely (within 2 business days) documentation sufficient for regulatory, clinical, and billing needs.
Qualifications:
• Current NYS licensure and registration as a Physician Assistant
• National board certification (AANP/ANCC for NP)
• Active DEA license
• Experience in Pain Management or Neurology preferred
• Knowledge of ICD-10 and pain related documentation/billing requirements preferred
Education:
• Graduation from an accredited PA Program
Experience:
• Prior outpatient APP experience required
• Experience in pain management, neurosurgery, orthopedics or related disciplines strongly preferred
Pay Range:
• $114,000-134,000/year
