The Phlebotomist has the responsibility and accountability for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected by the phlebotomist are used for laboratory test procedures that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical functions that are essential to laboratory operations. They also work in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities:

• Customer Interaction: Interact courteously with customers and respond to inquiries promptly. • Specimen Collection: Follow patient identification procedures to collect blood and other specimens, including off-site collections. • Compliance and Clerical Duties: Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, including safety and quality control. Perform clerical duties, including data entry and managing test transactions. • Training and Communication: Train new employees, students, and residents. Inform staff of unusual incidents. • Additional Responsibilities: Perform arterial punctures and maintain supplies cost-effectively.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent is required. • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred. • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy is preferred. • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred. • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) (ASCP or equivalent certification preferred. • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCM) • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal • Act 33 with renewal • Act 34 with renewal • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal • UPMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Disability/Veteran
