Job Title: Pharmacy Technician I

Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician I tracks and triages coverage determination requests for prior authorizations and Medicare Part D recipients. This role focuses on evaluating requests against defined criteria, coordinating with prescribers and providers, and accurately documenting decisions in the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) system to ensure timely and compliant authorization processing.

Responsibilities

  • Track and triage coverage determination requests submitted by providers for prior authorizations and Medicare Part D recipients.
  • Review incoming coverage determination requests and determine when a pharmacist review is required based on established guidelines.
  • Obtain verbal authorizations from prescribers and request detailed clinical information needed to support coverage determinations.
  • Approve coverage determination requests in accordance with defined criteria and organizational policies.
  • Enter coverage determination decisions into the PBM system with accurate and complete documentation.
  • Notify providers and members of coverage determination decisions in a clear and timely manner.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding authorization approvals and PBM online processes, providing accurate information and guidance.
  • Refer coverage determination requests for specialty medications to the appropriate delegated vendor or client for processing, following established workflows.
  • Contact providers to obtain additional clinical or administrative information necessary to facilitate coverage determination reviews.
  • Communicate coverage determination outcomes to physicians, providers, and members, ensuring they understand the decision and any next steps.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent education).
  • At least 1 year of experience in a retail, hospital, or mail order pharmacy setting.
  • Current state Pharmacy Technician license in good standing.
  • Proficiency in data entry with strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to track, triage, and prioritize multiple coverage determination requests efficiently.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for obtaining authorizations and clinical information from prescribers and providers.
  • Ability to interpret and apply defined criteria and guidelines to approve coverage determination requests.
  • Competence in documenting decisions and actions clearly and thoroughly in a PBM or similar system.
  • Customer service skills for responding to inquiries regarding authorization approvals and PBM online processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • National Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT) preferred.
  • Experience working with pharmacy benefit management (PBM) systems or similar authorization platforms.
  • Familiarity with Medicare Part D coverage determination and prior authorization processes.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with pharmacists, prescribers, providers, and members.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time-sensitive requests.
  • Comfort working with clinical information and understanding basic pharmacy terminology.

Work Environment

This role operates in a pharmacy and PBM-focused environment that may be office-based, retail, hospital, or mail order pharmacy related. Work involves extensive use of computer systems for data entry, documentation, and PBM platform navigation, as well as frequent phone communication with prescribers, providers, and members. The position requires sustained attention to detail in a fast-paced setting where accuracy and timely processing of coverage determinations are essential. Dress code typically aligns with professional or standard pharmacy technician attire, depending on the specific facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Texas City, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
