Work Environment:
This role is in a closed-door pharmacy setting , supporting long-term care and senior living populations. This is a non-retail environment focused on high-volume medication preparation, accuracy, and compliance.
Schedule:
- Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Rotating weekends required
- Overtime eligible based on business needs
Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist to fill prescriptions, prepare medications (including IVs), manage inventory, and support pharmacy operations. This role requires attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, regulated healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fill prescription orders and prepare medications for dispensing and delivery
- Accurately label medications, including auxiliary and cautionary instructions
- Perform non-sterile compounding (liquids, powders, ointments)
- Assist with IV preparation and maintain IV room cleanliness and safety standards
- Enter patient and prescription data into the system for processing and billing
- Assist with prepackaging medications in compliance with regulatory standards
- Support pharmacist in final prescription verification processes
- Coordinate accurate and timely delivery of medications
- Manage pharmacy inventory, including receiving, stocking, rotating, and removing expired medications
- Track lot numbers and expiration dates for compliance
- Handle returned medications according to protocol (credit or disposal)
- Operate automated dispensing and packaging machines
- Work in specialized areas such as controlled substances (narcotics) handling
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Assist with equipment checks, calibration, and sanitation
- Communicate effectively with internal teams and external customers
- Support onboarding and training of new staff
- Perform additional pharmacy support duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Active Pharmacy Technician license as required by the state of Michigan
- Previous experience in a pharmacy setting
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to operate computer systems and pharmacy software
- Ability to recognize and identify medications accurately
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high productivity expectations
Preferred:
- Long-term care pharmacy experience
- Experience with IV preparation and compounding
- Experience with automated dispensing systems
