POSITION SUMMARY:

The role of a YMCA Personal Trainer is to assess the fitness levels of and design custom programs for clients of the YMCA.  Trainers guide clients interested in weight loss, muscle building, and/or other fitness goals through in depth programs designed to increase the individual’s fitness levels on the appropriate modes of action.  YMCA Trainers will not only be responsible for taking on existing clients based on need, but also for soliciting new business and teaching gym members about the benefits of personal training.  Trainers promote member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Personal Trainers provide guidance while closely monitoring their clients’ progress on a regular basis.   Personal trainers can work with individuals or small groups as leaders and motivators. On a daily basis, trainers will carry out various tasks, both physical and administrative; assessing a clients’ physical condition, creating unique workout routines, explaining exercises in a clear and efficient way to ensure that clients exercise safely to avoid injuries, and communicating consistently regarding payments and session usage.  The Personal Trainer is an integral member of the YMCA team, along with other staff in wellness, membership, programming, and aquatics.  It is expected that the Personal Trainer will work in tandem with other staff to create an optimal experience for all members.

PAY RANGE:

$40 - $55/hr based on experience and $16.94/hr based on wellness associate secondary role

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The Personal Trainer will assist members in setting and achieving their fitness goals while emphasizing a high level of customer service and professionalism.
  • This position will also tailor individual plans for members and provide the one-on-one instruction that is needed to achieve the goals.
  • Through interaction with members, the Personal Trainer advises and sells personal training programs and packages
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Ensures that all necessary equipment is available for member use, and inspects equipment to be sure that it is in safe, clean working order.
  • Actively recruits and retains personal training clients.
  • Greet and develop friendly, professional relationships by engaging with all members.
  • Regularly checks on members’ progress in meeting personal and program goals.
  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living.
  • Adheres to dress code, attendance, and punctuality standards
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications

  • Applicant must have and maintain a current Personal Training national certification which may include: (NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM-CPT, ISSA, or AFAA or a comparable certification. (It is the responsibility of the trainer to provide recertification documentation prior to a certification expiration date).
    • Certification in CPR, AED and First Aid is required within 30 days of employment.
  • Working knowledge of safe procedures related to various types of free weight equipment, machine weight equipment, plate-loaded, and cardiovascular equipment.  In depth kinesiology knowledge.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Wellness Center Policies and Emergency Procedures.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and work ethic in the spirit and values of the YMCA principles.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Proudly wear YMCA apparel and name tag.  Proactively greet members warmly and openly.
  • Physical Requirements – Personal Trainers must have the ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 75lbs of weight.
  • Character Traits -   Proactive, self-directed, attentive, solution-oriented, dependable, multi-task orientated, effective communication skills and ability to develop effective working relationships.
  • Possess a high degree of relational skills in working one on one with clients.   A positive and professional manner is essential. All member information is to be kept highly confident.
  • Passionate about the YMCA Promise
  • Academic Major in a relative Wellness or Exercise related subject preferred
  • Previous sales experience a plus.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Environment: Professional Wellness Center setting with appropriate flooring, mirrors, exercise equipment and sound equipment.

The following are strictly prohibited. Failure to comply and repeated infractions are grounds for dismissal:

  • Training clients within the YMCA facility who have not purchased personal training services through the YMCA of Greenwich.
  • No personal cell phone use, unless on break outside of the Wellness Center.  No headphones at any time.
  • Double staffing of shifts (i.e. wellness associate shifts or teaching group wellness class while working as a personal trainer)
  • Entrance into the YMCA facility during non-operating hours.
  • Eating of any kind in the Wellness Center.  Personal Trainers may eat in the 1st floor member lounge or patio while on break. 

EFFECT ON END RESULTS:

   The effectiveness of the fulfillment of this position shall be measured by:

  • Increased member satisfaction in the areas of Wellness and Personal Training, as measured in the YMCA’s annual Membership Satisfaction Survey.
  • Monthly revenue growth for personal training sessions sold and rendered.
  • Increased demand for small group training sessions and alternative wellness based services.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Personal Trainers are expected to correspond directly with his/her client regarding scheduling.  Additionally, PT’s must reserve a training reservation, if necessary, through the YMCA reservation system.  Should a trainer need to cancel a session with a client, notification of such cancellation is required from the trainer to the client with 24 hours notice.  Trainers who cancel on clients more than once in a given 3 month period of time are at risk of losing a client.

    • Salary is competitive dependent upon experience.
    • YMCA provides an Individual Membership to all Part-Time staff.
