With a growing team of dedicated faculty, the Division of Critical Care looks to serve the children in the state of Virginia and beyond with exceptional high quality and collaborative critical care anchored by education and research that is unrivaled.  Our team provides 24/7 in-house care for over 1,000 patients annually. Our unit resides in the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) inpatient tower, which houses the largest pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Virginia with 24 beds.  Using a family-centered, collaborative approach in state-of-the-art pediatric facilities, we treat the sickest infants and children who are hospitalized for a broad range of life-threatening illnesses.  The Division of Pediatric Critical Care medicine at the Children’s Hospital ofRichmond at VCU is comprised of ten faculty members, seven advanced practiceproviders, and four critical care fellows.  We are actively involved in international groups such asPALISI, PNCRG, and VPS to support the advancement of pediatric critical careresearch. 

Chief Purpose of this position: TheDivision of Critical Care Medicine of the Department of Pediatrics at VirginiaCommonwealth University (VCU) seeks an exceptional intensivistphysician-scientist who specializes in pediatric critical care medicine andclinical, translational, or health services research related to intensive caremedicine to serve as the Director of CHoR Critical Care Research.  Successful candidates are those who aredynamic and collaborative clinicians who can lead and inspire innovativeresearch at VCU, fully leveraging the immense talent and resources available atthe VCU School of Medicine, the C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center forClinical and Translational Research, and the Children’s Hospital of Richmond atVCU Child Health Research Institute. 

Thecandidate will spend the predominance of their professional time performingresearch and anchoring the research mission for the Division of Critical CareMedicine. In addition, the candidate will provide clinical care in the 24-bedstate of the art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the new free-standingChildren Tower of the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and activelyparticipate in the education of fellows, residents, and students. The candidate will join the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics atthe Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU as an Associate or Professor ofPediatrics.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilitiesin the area of Critical Care Medicine. Faculty member will provide teaching andmentorship to Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows when applicable.
  • Research: Faculty member will have advanced knowledge inresearch methods and be able to participate in either basic, clinical,translational, and/or outcomes research. Faculty member will have experience insecuring revenue through grants and contracts and will serve as a researchmentor to other members of the division and the Department of Pediatrics.
  • Service: Faculty member will serve on departmental,hospital, or School of Medicine level committees when appropriate, as well as professionalactivities through journal review, conference presentations, etc.
  • Clinical: Faculty member will serve as a pediatric criticalcare medicine physician for the Department of Pediatrics in the Division ofPediatric Critical Care. The division provides 24/7 coverage of the intensivecare unit. 
  • Other:  Faculty member will takeon administrative duties associated with this role. It is also expected thatthis individual will maintain all required certifications for themselves andtheir laboratory personnel such as CITI and IACUC training certificates.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Possesses minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in pediatric critical care medicine at the level of an associate or full professor
  • Ability to obtain a valid medical license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Board-certified in pediatric critical care medicine.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and other healthcare technology systems.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Additional training and/or extensive experience caring for pediatric surgical/trauma patients
  • Additional training and/or extensive experience caring for congenital heart surgery patients
  • Applicants with clinical or basic science research experience and the ability to apply for and obtain early career awards from the NIH or other funding agencies.
  • Success in generating revenue (grants/contracts)
  • Possession of a master's or PhD-level research training
